weatherby 270 encore barrel

I just had virgin valley make me a weatherby 270 cal barrel for my thompson encore. It's 26". I have never had this cal. before, and need some bullet info for it. I will be useing factory weatherby ammo because I don't reload. I live in tennessee, and will be hunting whitetails, my shots will be from 50-150 yards. I try to shoot my bucks in the front shoulders, because if they run I'm in for a long drag back up the mountain. Will the ballistic tips penatrate both front shoulders? I need input bad.

I don't really think you should consistantly try to rely upon any of the ballistic tips to do so, IMO you should try some sort of bonded or other premium bullet such as the Nosler Partition or the Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, X bullet, etc., that is if you are going to be deliberately trying to blow out both shoulders every time.

I am curious though as to why you chose a .270 Wthby (whose entire marketing guise is based upon speed and distance) for shots of less than 200 yards when you could get the job done just as well with many less punishing cartridges.

Don't take that the wrong way, if you wanted a .270 Weatherby Magnum, by all means use it happily, I'm just curious.

Hit a deer in the shoulder with a Ballistic Tipped Style bullet from a .270 WBY, at less than 200 yds, and you will have nothing but bloodshot meat, ruining alsmost half of the good meat on a deer. Shoot the deer in the center of the chest with that bullet and caliber, and you have a very dead deer with a massive blood trail IF he goes anywhere. As far as running up the mountain, you will see no difference in a deer shot in the shoulder or in the engine room. If your aim is to break a leg bone, you are aiming for a very small target anyway, so just aim for the center of the chest and get it done just as fast while saving a lot of meat. Don't know what Weatherby loads in the .270 as far as bullet weight, but I would try the 130 grain if you must use them.

I have a 7mm Mag and I shot most of my deer in the shoulder also.(not much worried about shoulder meat) I shoot nosler partion bullets 90% of the time they drop in there tracks...
