.308 Ballistic Tips.
 

I would like to here firsthand from guys who have used a Nosler Ballistic tip from a .308 in 150 grain on deer and similar sized game. I have decided on using these bullets out of my 99, using Noslers data for Varget powder. According to their manual, it should do around 3000 FPS. Good enough for me. I'll simply buy a box of factory Federal Premium Partions in 180 grains for elk and moose, but load the BT's for everything else.

I personally haven't used them on deer, but I load them for my neighbor and he uses them. Shoots a Savage 99. He swears by them and they kill deer in a hurry. I use a 130 BT in my 270 Win and wouldn't use anything else, and I picked up a 99e myself in 308 Win and will be using 150 grain BTs in it.

I have used them on deer and will continue. I use them in .308, .270, .243, and .260
but all in bolt action rifles. I would not use them in a 99 unless I had one in the chamber and one in the tube. A ballistic tip pushing on a primer with .308 recoil is just not a good idea.

Thanks bmullin57, but all 99's have either a rotary magazine or detachable clip. There is no tube, thus no tip to primer contact.

I almost always shoot the Nosler B.T. in my 7 mm mag.I also use them in the .308 They are very fragnable ( is that a word?) I have been thinking about going back to the Hornady Boat Tail Spire Point. I have never had anything but good results from them.If I recover a bullet they retain more weight.

Between my father and i, we have shot 12 to 15 white tails with a 30-06 useing 150 and 165 N. BT's. I like the 165's better as they do penetrate a bit better. The bullet does break up more than i'd like, but for a non premium bullet, it works very good.

I also shot several caribou with a 30-06 useing 165's, (includeing the one in the picture) and in my opinion they are on the light side for anything but rib shots on animials of this size.

Over all, they are a pretty good "non premium" bullet.

I like the BT bullet and load it in most everything I have. I have found, and proven, that you can overdrive them. After calling and writting Nosler, I finally received a letter admitting the same. They continue to improve them, just be aware that they do operate better at the slower speeds.
Swampdog, the 7mm Mag is doing just that. I've quit loading them in the 7 Mag and just use them in the 7-08, and they are great.
I've found for all my 30 cals, 308, 06, 300 Wby, and 300 UM, I get my best results using Sierra's 165gr HPBT Gameking. Terrific accuracy and powerful on game.

Yeah Highpower ,I know. I have been smoking a 140 gr. B.T. at about 3350 f.p.s. out of my Model 70 :D It is pure death on a deer but it really makes a mess. I have always liked the boat tail spire point by Hornady .I got caught up in the Ballistic tip craze years ago and just haven't ever came out of it yet.Maybe I can re-train myself...........LOL

BT is almost the ideal and perfect bullet for Deer for anything under 3000fps MV. You should be careful on a few shots. The front brisket/shoulder shot at long range might be a tad risky. But a boiler room shot is a sure thing. The Sierra 165gr gameking is the second most perfect bullet for deer.

The new barnes 168gr Triple shock is the best for anything from deer to caribou. I wouldn't hesitate and am going to take my 308win elk hunting with this bullet. And with this bullet you can take that ricky shoulder shot and you know its going to plow thru to the heart without falling apart.

3,000 fps with 150 grainers and 3,350 with 140s? What manuals are you guys using? Sounds mighty hot for a .308!!!

Nosler's own #5 reloading manual. It shows 3001 FPS, I belive with Varget powder. Sorry, I don't have it handy right now.

I tried the 150 Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertips in my model 788, .308 a few years ago. They did pretty good i killed two with them. I heard alot of talk about how fragile they were and that you only wanted to shoot them in wide open spaces. I shot into alot brush on a small buck, luckily i must not have hit any limbs because i hit the buck right behind the front shoulder. It did fragment inside him though, i had about 4 exit holes. They werent too bad off bullets though i prefer the 165 Trophy Bonded Bearclaws.

right out of the Nosler reload book...WW748 i think it was 48 gr. will give 3000 fps..it works fine with no sighns of excess pressure, and is right acurate to boot!! i get MOA with my model 7 and blr.

I need to correct myself, thats why i keep the books and not rely on memory. It is in the 48th reloading manual from Lyman..and it is 50 gr of 748 with the 150 gr bullet, and it is 2996 fps, the pressures are the lowest listed for any other powder listed..only 43,200C.
I use 48 gr because it is the same weight as i use for my 358 Win. Guess i am lazy, but it works well in both.
