280 takeoff

I was just curious why the 280 really hasnt taken off as one of the premier whitetailed cartridges? i really like mine and would never trade it for the 270(hope that doesnt start a debate, but it is flatter shooting and can handle heavier bullets? I dont hand reload but I buy my shells in bulk supplies so I really dont see how people say ammuntion availability is the problem especially if you plan ahead

RE: 280 takeoff

In my humble opinion, the .280 Remington was overshadowed by the subsequent introduction of the 7mm Remington Magnum, which came out not too long after the .280. In those days, people bought things that had "magnum" in their names, even if they weren't much of an improvement. In addition, Remington chose to use the .280 in slide and semi-auto rifles, and consequently underloaded it somewhat. The 7X64 Brenneke is almost the same, and has been very popluar everywhere on earth but here for almost a century. Yes, the .280, most especially if handloaded, is better than the .270 Win., and we know how good that round is!!

I can't comment as to why, but from what I've read the 280 is more efficient than the 270 in powder burn rate.

Viper: i wouldnt trade mine either, as far as im concerned the 280 is an awesome deer/bear caliber, mine is a 700 BDL and what a great shooter that gun is!

My friend has been selling more 280's lately. the 270 just got a head start and the old 7mm rem express never caught up. then when they called it the 280 rem it still didnt do well. i think it's a fine cartridge.
