12 guage v. 20 gauge

I have always been a fan of 12 gauge shotguns. However, lately I have been more interested in purhcasing a 20 gauge. It would be used mainly for all types of bird hunting. What are your thoughts when choosing a 20 over a 12?

i been thinking of it too....being the 12ga may become a slug gun.....and i have a turkey gun...and dont hunt big birds like ducks and gesse....i think it will make a fine upland gun.....using highbrass...which is all i shoot anyway.....the guns are lighter.....recoil isnt as bad....im considering it myself......just gota get the truck paid for..........

A 20 is great for upland shooting. IMO it's getting on the light side for Pheasant and passing ducks, BUT, with ammo what it is today, it can be made to work. I would think about which shotgun you want to buy. If its a nice upland double or O/U, more of a special purpose gun, then I can see getting it in a 20. If its and 870 pump, general purpose gun, well, I don't see it. Might as well stick with a 12 in that case. But then again, I can go along with any excuse to buy a new gun.

I have a 20, 12 & 10 ga. I love them all for different situations. To be honest, I actually seem to shoot better with my 20 ga. when I do sporting clays (but it does have skeet chokes) where as my 12 has full/mod. I have yet to get a pheasant yet with my 20 but we hunt wild birds and the shooting is long. I would reccomend both:D JDinAB

I use my 12ga for deer & bigger game , for birds like Pheasant . chukkar etc I use my 20ga berreta .....easier to walk long distances with. 20ga is plenty for birds ....

Im planing on getting me a 12 gauge Stoeger condor O/U or Stoeger Uplander SxS, I noticed today browning sells gauge reducers ( you can shoot 20,28 etc out of a 12 guage barrel). So if i ever need to step down in guage I may have to buy me a set of those.
