Rainsing dents in wood stocks?
 

Anyone ever heard of raising dents in wood stocks using steam? Any specifics would be appreciated!

Yes I did it once. I took a soldering iron that had a small spongue that I soaked. I then put the soaked spongue on the dent on the stock and let it there for a few minutes. After the wood had soaked up some of the moisture I then put the heated soldering iron on the dent and wala, the dent was gone. Now when you do this it causes a mark on the stock so be prepared to go the extra mile for finishing the stock.

If its a real dent and not a gouge (deep scrach) it can be raised with your household iron and a wet rag. Soak a rag with water and lay it over the dent. Make sure the steam is turned off on the iron and touch it to the rag over the dent. As the dent is being raised make sure that you move the rag when it gets dry. Depending on how deep the dent is it could take just one shot or a few.

Basically all you are doing is steaming the wood to make it swell up. The wet rag forces the steam into the wood instead of letting it float away.

Like polack said it will need tp be refinished so unless you are prepared to do this leave it alone and call it a character mark.

For shallow dings/dents you can also try rubbing the area with a wet cloth until the wood is wet and then take a heat gun (paint stripper gun) to the area. Don't concentrate the heat in 1 spot, but work it back and forth across the ding like you was spary painting it - just a lot closer to the wood.

This worked pretty good for me on small dings. :D
