Marlin 25N question

Hey all - I recently bought a Marlin 25N. This is actually my first bolt action rifle ever - I prefer lever action but anyway my question...

When I open the bolt, slide it back and then close it - I notice that a part remains back about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. There is a red dot that is visible, I assume this is to let you know that the rifle is ready to fire.

When you squeeze the trigger - it closes.

But what about if I am just cleaning the gun or showing someone and I work the bolt. Is it OK to leave the rifle in that position? I hate to dry-fire the rifle to close it but is it bad to keep it like that?

RE: Marlin 25N question

Hold the trigger while you close the bolt. This will decock the bolt.
