They have new 870 rem listed in the paper for $223 for 3" and $269. for the 3 1/2". Last week they had Mossberg listed for two something with both barrels ,(I never realy paid attention) My point is I think I would look around some The price seems out of line . They have a maverick in a 3" for $119.77 . Go with a rem would be my advise .

Mine has been great. Have taken it hunting in all manner of nasty Iowa weather. Never a problem.
Took it to a three gun IPSC match and shoot the hell out of it that day,,,,while we had three or four other guns at the match break down, my Mossberg kept right on going....got hot as hell due to the high round counts,,,,but it was accurate and reliable.

as far as shotguns go, I've owned (at various times) Savage, Stevens-Savage, Mossberg, Winchester, Remington, Browning and High Standard. I don't think I've ever owned a "10" but would rate the Mossberg shotguns a "6" in the world of shotguns ....maybe a "7". thy're functional, solid, fairly reliable and not too ugly.

I'd put the Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 in the same general class . . . along with the Winchester 1300. Any of them are good, functional shotguns. I've had good luck with Mossbergs, but would be just as happy with the Remington if you find a good deal there. The Mossbergs that include two or more barrels are some of the best priced packages on the market. Certainly there are better shotguns out there, but I'd be surprised if you were not pleased with the gun. I've had a 500 for several years with no complaints. Use both rifled barrels and vent ribs for all kids of game.

My dad gave me a 500 on my 16th birthday and that was 16 years ago.
I had my FIRST misfire with it last month on a goose hunt in West Texas.
I have 4 Shotguns and my 500 is my primary field gun.
Never fails me and I hit almost everything I point at.

I bought a 500 model 12 guage about 6 years ago when I turned 18. This gun has never failed me and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Mossberg. Also, do you have any need for that rifled barrel? If not, go get it at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart sells the 500 model with the vented barrel, and three choke tubes and a lock for just under 200 dollars. If you need a rifled barrel, then get the one you saw. I don't know if Wal-Mart in New York sells guns or not. When I lived in New JErsey, they didn't sell guns at Wal-Mart due to the strict gun laws there. Also, the only shells that I have ever had the empties jam on me was the Remington Nitro Steel 3" shells. They are too long when they come out of the ejection port and will jam up. I've never had a problem with any other shells like Federal or Estate, or any others I've shot out of it. I determined that it was a problem with the Remington shells and not the Mossberg. I've never had a misfire with it. I've sat in the rain for hours waiting on ducks and never had a problem with it. It's also very easy to take apart and clean and reassemble. You can't go wrong with this gun. I just wish they made the 500 in a 10 guage 3-1/2" shell. I'd buy it in a second. Matt
