308 winchester
what is your opion on the 308 winchester? why?

RE: 308 winchester
i think that the 308 is a very good rifle caliber for deer sized game. It is inherently accurate, light recoiling, fairly fast for shortaction i get 3000 fps out of my 150 gr handloads. Just a good gun.

RE: 308 winchester
The .308, can and has been used on whatever you would use a 30-06, or .300 win mag on. Look at real world ballistics. It really is an excellent little popper, with plenty of power to spare.

RE: 308 winchester
i have used the .308 win for 35 years now and have no complaints! I've taken whitetail, mulies, antelope and moose with it and never been disapponted. Great shooting cartridge with light recoil!!
Try it!! You'll like it!:) |

pharaoh2,
Nothing to say about your post, but love your signature. Wish I had come up with it, and I don't normally have much to say about such, but gotta love it. dog1 |
RE: 308 winchester
Easy to shoot and reload for. 150-165 grains in my M70 seem to work best. Plenty of power for whitetails and accuracy for varmits. Whats not to like.
Some will recommend a 30-06 over the .308. In my opinion I would take the .308 over the 06. If more power was need in a 30 caliber I would choose a .300 Win. Someone once explained the differance between the 30-06 and .308 at this: .308 is getting ran over by a cement truck the 30-06 is getting ran over by a full cement truck....Same out come....just more splat. |
RE: 308 winchester
Sweet caliber. If I were permitted only one rifle it would be a pre-64 model 70 in either .308 or 30.06. gg.

RE: 308 winchester
The .308 is suitable for anything that the 30-06 or any 300 mags are suited to. The only difference is that some of the 300 mags will let you attempt to do it farther than most of us should be shooting at game animals any way.

RE: 308 winchester
I like it! Lots of fun! Accurate little smallbore! Great for practicing/paper punching/plinking! Works well as a "warm up" for mid and large bores when at the range.
A bit short on case capacity if you are wanting to shoot the heavier .308 bullets, especially if they are of the Barnes X variety. That is about it. EKM |
RE: 308 winchester
my father in law killed a grizz with a .308 winchester....
with the right bullet it is a deadly rifle cartridge |
RE: 308 winchester
There is little difference ballistically between the '06 and the .308. With heavier bullets and bigger case to reload, the nod would go to the '06. A little milder recoil, and short action, give the nod to the .308!
The .308 is one of my two favorite cartridges! If you don't need heavier bullets than say, 160 gr. the .308 will do anything the '06 will! |
RE: 308 winchester
There's almost nothing not to like about the .308.
My only complaint is the short neck which makes it a bit more difficult to work with for shooting cast lead bullets- but 99.9% of shooters will never shoot cast lead out of their rifles anyhow.:D |
RE: 308 winchester
I am with the 308 users. I have 2 of them a Win 88 Lever and a 7600 Rem, I like the lesser recoil and the shorter stroke for 2nd shot, and it will take anything on the North American continent with the proper load. I also have an 06 in 7600 that I took Bear hunting one time , long ago and it is gathering dust.

RE: 308 winchester
I think the .308 is a very good cartridge for all except the big bears.

RE: 308 winchester
Great caliber, easy to find ammunition. Avaliable in many diffrent rifles. Used to be a long range shooting competition round. I have one in a Remington 788 and love it. Probably one of the top calibers/rounds out there along with the 30-30, 30.06, .270, .243. If you dont have one you should definelty shoot one im sure you will like it.

RE: 308 winchester
Specifically speaking on this .308 issue - has anyone ever had one of the Ruger 77IIs in the sporter stainless version of the .308 - and if so what is your opinion of this caliber/rifle combination?
|
RE: 308 winchester
I have a Ruger Mk II All Weather in 308 Win. Really nice rifle. Shoots well and is as tough as nails.
|
RE: 308 winchester
If I didn't own any firearms and was going to buy 1 rifle for target and game up to and even larger than deer it would probably be a 30/06 or a 308 cause I could get ammo anywhere...in the world for that matter.

RE: 308 winchester
with a ordinary load that you buy at the store could you take moose and elk with it? how about black bears?

RE: 308 winchester
Been using the .308 for years in several different rifles. All very accurate. No problems deer hunting either. One shot, one deer - every time. Never had one run off much after the hit either. Good for elk & moose too if you use the heavier bullets, like 180gr.
Recommend Nosler or Trophy Bonded for use on the larger critters. As for black bear, I'd again go with 180gr., or maybe use the 165gr.. Of course, 150gr deer load will take most black bear cleanly, but I'd just like a little more bullet weight for those larger black bears. |

RE: 308 winchester
I went through qutie a bit of trouble today to order a .308... very surprised that noone carries them. My experience with the 308 is mainly military.... I am a USMC & Army veteran since '73; the ballistics are decent, it is not quite as noisy as the great 30'06 and we found it to have incredible accuracy potential. If memory serves me right, our snipers were using a Rem 700 stiff barrel and 3x9 redfields.... 900-1100 meter shots. So many, many good bullets with flight characteristics that allow it to go downrange with a little less powder. I understand why we went to the M16 but I immediately missed the M14. Ah, the M16. Fastest shooting squirrel rifle to ever be issued to a standing army.

RE: 308 winchester
To biscuit jake: Well, it good to hear from someone that has used the M14 in the military. Personally, I like the .308 cartridge design better than the 30-06. I've had several 30-06s and have never really liked the cartridge for some reason that is hard for me to pinpoint. I'm tempted to get either a heavy barrel Remington VLS or perhaps a standard weight 22-inch barrel stainless Ruger M77. I know what you're saying about the M-16 - I have had a chance to use it some and was not impressed at all with it. However, I have a friend who saw combat in Vietnam and he swears by it. From what I've been reading lately the military has gone back to one of its original ideas on rifle cartridges by developing the 6.8mm,(.270 cal.) in a newer form of the M-16. Some people do not know this but the .270 Wincester was originally designed by the military as a follow-on to the 30-06, but it was dropped for some reason and picked up by Winchester for a sporting cartridge. Thank you for your service to your country!

RE: 308 winchester
General rule of thumb, buy a .308win. Enough said on that.
Oh, you asked why: It's capable of anything and everything that the .30-06 is, which the .30-06 is truly capable of virtually everything that the .300 mags are capable of, so although no one really ever says it that way, the .308win is just as field capable as any of the .300 mags (which has also been my experience, not just an assumption), BUT, it lacks in one very important aspect to all of these cartridges.... RECOIL, the .308 is a joy to shoot, while putting more than a few rounds out of the "stronger" 30cals can get pretty painful pretty quickly. Bottom line, the .308 is proven on every north american game species, and in anyone's hands is perfectly capable of taking any of these species except maybe the three great bear species...which are typically reserved for bigger calibers, not just bigger cartridges. |
