Who shoots a 300wby mag? Do you like it? What do you think of it?

I had a mark V in 300wby and was not happy with the accuracy of the rifle.I am much more happy with my 300ultramags.

I had a 300Wby Mark also, and again was not happy with the accuracy of any of the weatherby cartridges. Very touchy to COL due to the freebore. They can be darn accurate one day in one temp and then be not half as accurate the next. I know some love them. But I am anti freebore, and antibelt. The marks are nice rifles, with three lugs, but that price. I can't deal with that. I can have me a very good gun built for that price. And I also have a 300RUM, and I believe it is an improvement with no belt and less freebore. Also don't see the accuracy variations I did with the wthby.

I have one in a win m-70, Accuracy is plenty good for deer, I have never tried shooting for tight groups. I have 150 gr Barnes X hand loaded and it drops deer like god tapped them on the shoulder himself ..

I have owned two 300wby's in the past one was a mark V sporter the other a Win M70 Classic SS both were right hand guns and I am left handed but I have learned to shoot with both, but I do prefer left. The Mark V right off had problems. After 3 shoots the bolt (sometimes) became sticky and didn't function, after 6 shots, with out cleaning I (sometimes)couldn't get the bolt to open.It was a on again off again problem. It also was not accurate at all. In 1992 I shot 3 times at camp to chech the rifle. The next day I shot four times at a buck mule deer, he was running and I gut shot him on the first shot. Missed the next two and killed him on the last. That was early in the morning. That evining I shot at a bull Elk about 170-200 yards away. I was only able to shoot twice and the gun seizd up, both shoots were dead on through the chest but I could only watch as the bull walked 50 yards, and disapeared and fell dead in the timber. After that I sold it and bought the Win M70. I liked that gun, very accurate, used it mostly for deer hunting, but sold it two years ago. Now own a ultra Mag.

I have a 300 Wby in the Vanguard fiberglass model. Shoots under an inch with my handloads. Awesome gun. My previous gun was a Sako.

I own a .340 Wby. Mag. Mark V, and it has been a excelent rifle. I have friends who own .300 Wby. Mags., and they also love them. There are 21 different factory loads for the .300 Wby. Mag. availabile right now if you don't handload. Good luck.

I've got a .300 Wby Sako 75. I have enjoyed shooting it. It has accounted for several deer. In fact, it has been my main deer rifle for the last few years, though I realize it's way more gun than needed. I reload for it and I've been very pleased with the level of accuracy this rifle and cartridge have produced.

In the future I doubt I'll be using it as much, however, and I might even sell it. I just bought a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 .30-06 which will probably become my primary deer rifle from here on out.

Solitary Man. That's not a bad idea. Check out actual balistics. Does the .300 wby really stand that high above the .300 win? And does the .300 win really stand that high above the 30-06? or how about the .308? Really, you get a little flatter tragectory, and some more energy. But lets face it here folks. I've said it before. At what range is your average shot? Do you really need a fire breathing, shoulder bashing, make-you-ears-bleed thumper to kill a 150 pound deer at 100 yards? Yes some critters are killed further, alot further. But the shooter could probably have gotten closer in most cases. How many deer are walking around on 3 legs due to a poor shot? You may be a good shot. The rest perfect, the wind ideal. But at 500 yards, who can tell what the wind is doing? I feel that in order to make a clean kill. you MUST put that bullet in the right place. I've seen alot of good shots turn into bad shots due to excessive recoil to. I used to own a few big thumpers, and I kind of miss them. But now i have chose to shoot a rifle that I know well, and can fire 50 rounds through on a nice afternoon that won't cause me to flinch. Yes I'm restricted in range, but thats part of the fun. It's called hunting. You undoubtebly are out there to enjoy the experiance. any fool can go to safeway and buy meat for the table. It's different when you take it yourself. Consider a rifle that you will be able to shoot proficiantly and you will not make a bad choice. Big thumper or not. Enjoy.

I dont think I'll get a 300wby any more.

I am not saying you are flinching but my dad had that problem with his 270 wby mag and sent it back to weatherby because it was not hitting right and they shot it and sent back the targets and they were right on. So you may be flinching and may want to send it back to weatherby.

I don't mean to swerve your decision. If you really want one of these things, by all means do what you feel is right. Otherwise, why not consider a 30-06 or .308? You may even want to ackley them. But then, I guess that would put things back to my above statement.

I have a .300 Weatherby Vanguard also. It will shoot 1" groups or less @ 100 with handloads,and a little fine tuneing on the trigger. The only reason I picked one up is for a elk hunt I have planed for 2005 season in New Mexico if the draw goes my way...:eek:

remember that the rifle is always more accurate then the shooter..
i have shot the weatherby mark 5 in .300 mag and i loved it... you can get a jap weatherby at walmart in the .300 mag for about 4 bills...
