220 swift
 

I've been reading about this round, and it seems pretty amazing! Anybody have some first-hand knowledge to share?

I have a ruger #1V in 220 Swift, beautiful rifle however the swift bbl aint as good as it once was as the throat is pretty well burnt out of it.
Used to have alot of fun with that rifle shooting pop bottles and milk jugs waaaayyy out there.
My wife had never fired a gun before meeting me and the swift was her 1st one. After she had learned how to shoot that gun became hers.

I have some targets around here some where with some very impressive groups, most shot by my wife. The longest shot we made with witnesses around was at 2L pop bottle at just over 700 yds surprisingly that little bullet still had enough juice to where you could see the hit ei; the bottle popped. I made a shot once by myself, I have know idea how far it was but it was along ways. I shot 5 rounds at a milkjug full of water and figured I was missing as I couldnt see any hits. I drove out to retrieve the jug before i left and lo n behold it had 3 holes in it, those little bullets just didn't have enough energy left out there to make the jug pop.

The best load I came up with was with 35gr of reloder 15 and sierra 55 gr SP bullets using Rem brass and a Winchest primer. I fooled around with alot of diffrent loads and yes had to make it go over 4000 fps just to say I did it.

We got probably 7000 rnds thru this before the accuracy really tapered off due to the throat errosion, I can't seat the bullets out any farther to get it closer to the rifling. Keep your loads to a resonable level tho and it should last along time. Have fun

my dad has a ruger M77 220swift and it the most durable gun he has. he throws it around in the farm truck all the time, but is always on target. ive seen him drop a running coyote at 500 yards with it, which is amazing! hes had it for 15 years and has only had to sight the scope in once, when he first got it. everytime hes shot at a target its been dead on, even very accurate to 600 yards. this is definately a good rifle ;)

I carry a 220 swift ruger rifle in my ranch truck. The rifle has a bull barrel, a harris bipod, and a leupold 3-9-50x scope on it. I use this rifle on all kinds of things. From shooting cactus and rattle snakes, to shooting 400# boars and mature whitetail bucks. This is one of my favorite rifles that I own, and I'm extremely confident when shooting it. The longest shot I've taken with it was a 350 yard shot on a doe. I've dropped alot of big mature whitetail bucks with this rifle at ranges from 50-175 yards. Its a fun gun, and a good round.

Thanks for the replies, guys. If NEF chambered the .220 swift in a handi-rifle, I'd get one, as my funds are limited. Since that isn't an option, are there any other affordable options out there?

Try the used gun market. A Savage or Howa should be fairly easy to find.
If you want to stick to an NEF, consider the .22-250. At speeds under 4000+ FPS the two cartridges are identical. And yes the .22-250 can hit 4000+

I have a swift in a ruger m77 mkIIvt and love it . it is the compare to varmit round of all . all the talk about barrel burner , well the 22-250 is only 100fps slower and its not a burner ? come on !! mine is very accurate and fun to shoot . my daughter is 12 and can shoot 3/4 in groups at 100 yrds. factory loads from hornady are great to shoot ,mine is very accurate with the 40 gr. v-max at 4200 fps. hand loads you can get alittle more than that .good luck
