Galayans is ok, but if you live in the cities, I would suggest heading up to Scheels in St. Cloud. They have a huge selection, and the guys there actually know what they're talking about.

Then try Galyans in Minnetonka. Ask for Pete, he's a good guy and knows quite a bit.

what about Joes?

It doesn't really matter where you buy your gun. If you know what you are looking for, and have done a little research, you will probably know more about your gun of choice than the salesperson. Just go to a few stores and compare the prices of the guns you're considering. Joes is a fine place, so are any of the Gander Mountains or Galyans in the cities. You will probably find that the customer service is about the same at all of these places, and the price will be similar as well, so don't get to concerned about where you buy your gun. It's the same gun no matter where you purchase it.

i've purchased 3 guns at galyans, a browning a bolt, benelli sbe and a marlin lever action 30-30. all three were reasonably priced, got a good deal on the benelli.

you have to have a general knowledge about the gun you want to purchase, the salesman at Galyans are hit and miss, a few of them really know what they're talking about while some of the others will try to sell you something they want you to buy vs what you really want.

what kind of shotgun are you looking for?

870 express in 12 gauge why?

RE: galyans?

The 870 is one of the most popular shotguns out there. Any place that sells guns should have at least a few, so it shouldn't matter where you go. Just shop around to find the cheapest price, and get the gun there.

Check the papers or at a good sporting goods store and see if they have any used 870's. I also think there are a few sporting clays/ trap/skeet ranges around your area. Those guys can be quite helpful and many times somebody has a license to sell guns. That could save you a few bucks and usually 870's are so tough that a used one is just as good as a new one.

What about the Cabela's in Owatonna? You aren't too far from there. The also have a used gun section. If you've never been to that store it is absolutely worth going regardless if you are buying a gun or not. Check out the mount of the three lion's attacking a zebra, it is almost scary how real it looks.
