340-Weatherby, 338-RUM or 338-Lapua???
 

I droped the idea of the 375-Ultra Mag.
I started thinking about the 338-Lapua instead? The 338-Lapua is chambered in Sako rifles. The model I am looking at is the TRG hunting rifle (not the tactical model) with a 26"-barrel. Sako also chambers this same rifle in 340-Weatherby. I am not sure if Sako chambers the 338-RUM? The 338-Lapua would be a handload only rifle. I have never seen a box of factory ammo for this rifle. I reload for everything anyway so thats not a problem.
Just wondering if anyone has or knows someone that shots the 338-Lapua?

You might try this website http://www.black-hills.com/ forthe Lapua stuff. The Armalite AR-30 is a nice bolt action version of the caliber as well. Handloading this one would not be a bad idea. The Ultra Mag is a pretty hot one as well and the ammo is alot more reasonable. Check the Chuck Hawks website out http://www.chuckhawks.com/super_338_Mags.htm

One thing that hex's me with my RUM, is the lack of decent brass available. I use the remington stuff and have decent luck with it, but wish someone made some high quality brass. With the 338 lapua, you have the finest, (most expensive) brass available to you with the performance of a 338RUM. Only downside is much more expensive to shoot than the 338RUM.

I'd go with the 338 Lapua.

1. It is a strong 338 (designed to be a 1000 yard sniper rifle)
2. It's based on the beltless Rigby case,
3. It's not a "me too" cartridge, and
4. It is NOT a magnum! (sic) :D

elk camp, it is not a magnum??? What are you guys smokin out there? 200gr bullets at 3100fps with well over 35ft/lbs of recoil, and official name is 338 Lapua Magnum. And its not a magnum?

Ouch!

My "bible" (Barnes #3) let me down & shows it only as 338 Lapua! www.lapua.com shows it just as you stated "338 Lapua Magnum" and I'm sure that is right --- I stand corrected. I guess I'll have to focus on the other two!

I am going to go with the 338-Lapua if I can find it in a Sako TRG-S M998 Super Magnum action? I have been looking for this rifle & can not find it anywhere? The model I am looking for is a hunting style rifle NOT the Tactical model. If anyone finds a new one in a gunshop somewhere please let me know.

Wolf Killer..you might want to look at the 338/378 magnum since it has a belt:D . Comes with Norma Brass and the big price tag but probably pricewise same as the Lapua. I owned a Weatherby Accumark in that caliber for awhile. I bought it off an estate LNIB but after giving it some serious thought sold it for a profit and saved a bunch on brass and loaded ammo.

I am looking for something that is a little more exotic that the 338-378. Several people that live near me either shoot the 30-378 or 338-378. I want to have the new toy on the block this time.:D
I loved ELKampMaster's comment about the 338-Lapua not being a magnum.:D I myself did not know it's official name was 338-Lapua Magnum until bigcountry posted it.
The Sako rifle I am looking at retails for $400 less than the Weatherby Accumark. Like I said before I just want a new toy. I want something that not many other people have. The only down side I can see is I will have to reload for this rifle. I already reload for every gun I own so thats not a problem. The price of brass is high. Weatherby brass is also high. 338-RUM brass is cheaper but it is lower grade brass also.
In my humble but often correct opinion.:D I think big magnums are like pretty women. They both cost you lots of money to have around.:D

If you can't find a Sako that is already chambered in the Lapua you can always buy a rifle chambered in the .338 ultra mag and have it rechambered and the bolt face opened up to fit the Lapua. Like a remington 700 LSS which will probably be a bit erasier to find.

You aren't exactly going with an inexpensive shooter any how.
