There is a web site for bull barrels to add on to it. The bull barrel will help increase the accuracy. I have a 597 also, it's the .22LR version, and I love the thing. It was my first gun that I got from my dad, and I’ve had nothing but luck with it. I found that the CCI Velocitor rounds work the best through it. The groups of 5 shots I’ve gotten out of it at 50 yards were coverable by a penny. And this is after running 1,000 or so rounds through it 5-6 weekends a year, for 4 years. If there is anything other then a barrel that you want to add on to it let me know, and I’ll help ya out. Good luck, and have fun with the little guy.

Glad to see some one else likes the 597.
When I bought mine most people on this forum didn't have a good thing to say about them.
I have never had a bit of trouble with it and it likes the cheap Winchester ammo the best.

I'm just glad to see that someone actually likes it at all.

While mine is VERY accurate it won't get through a single magazine with out jamming up at least once and sometimes four or five times. I doesn't matter what ammo I feed it.

Do you guys have the plastic or metal magazines?

RE: 597

I use the plastic magazine, for some reason the metal didn't work to good for me when I was hunting on the really cold days for squirrels, i don't know why, but I have never had any problems with it other then the occasional miss fire that all auto's have. And the problem that I had with the Winchester ammo is that for some reason their rim fire powder doesn't fire very clean. I've just found CCI to have teh best rim fire ammo around

The 597 was the rifle that soured me on Remingtons. I bought mine hte year that they came out with them and couldn't shoot a full magazine through it without getting at least one jam. I understand that Remington has ironed out most of the problems since then, but I sold mine long before that.

I might give the 597 another try in the future, now that there are aftermarket triggers and hammers and other parts available, but its more likely that I'll buy a Kimber or CZ bolt action .22 before instead of a semi-auto toy.

Wow! There are actually people who like the 597!
It is the worst piece of crap I've ever shot! As Briman said, it has soured me on Remington, altogether!
I have not found a good use for my 597 yet! It is too bulky for a paperweight, and too light for an anchor, it is best suited for a door prop!

It is surprising to hear of a satisfied 597 owner, what's even more surprsing is when you hear of a happy 710 owner.Miracles never cease.

You know how sometimes, you can get a bad rifle from any manufacturer? Well, when it comes to those two rifles, maybe sometimes you get lucky and get a decent one!?!?

I have a 597M, and so far it's NEVER jammed and shoots very well!! I have a straight 7.5 power Leupold, and i really like it!!

I don't know if the M's are made any better than the std 597's or not, but my M does everything i ask of it, and i'm NOT afraid to call it a POS, "if" it was a POS, but it's NOT!!

The 710's are another story, I've handled several and I wouldn't haul one home if it was given to me.[:'(] Truly a POS.
