Got my new savage.. noticed a few things

I just rec'd my new savage 10gxp in 7mm-08. It pretty nice for the price however i noticed a few things..

1. that action (bolt) is a little sloppy when closed. You can wiggle the bolt about 1/4" up and down when it's closed. I can do this a little on my model 70, but not as much. very minor movement on the winchester.

2. The barrel doesn't look anywhere near as nice as the barrel on my Win Model 70. It almost appears as if rust could start at any minute. There is NO rust, but it looks that way. My M70 is dark black and looks pristine compared.

Are these too things what i should expect from this savage gun? I paid about $416 for the package gun, with scope, sling, targets, plugs, lock etc..

I asked this in a previous thread, but does anyone have any info on the 7mm-08? Alot of positives on this forum and others, but does anyone have any reference about it.

Well, for 416 dollars, you really can't expect the blueing, stock, to be top notch. You do get what you pay for. I went down this road with Savage. I got a 10FP but accuracy was so-so. I only gave it about 100 rounds and sold it back. I was going to replace the stock, and make into what I wanted. But after adding it up, thats the price of a gun I wanted initially. There is a reason, they sell so cheap, they have to cut corners somewhere. They put on a good barrel and have a way of setting headspace quickly in manufacturing that is accurate. The rest is the rest.

What the savage is, however is a not frilles gun that alot of people have success with. I have noticed alot of people embellishing some on the stories, and some people who get one hole accuracy.

You sure didn't get cheated with that price.

There's a lot ofposters that tout Savage as a really fine (but ugly) gun. I too have posted to confirm their accuracy claims....they're good in the accuracy department.

My chief complaint with Savage has been triggers, safety, feeding, and other mechanical issues that cannot be seen unless at a range actually running rounds thru the gun.

Semi, the things you take issue with are things that can be seen at the time of purchase...they're visual...you had the privelage of inspecting them at gun shops....it's no different than getting a mini14 home and saying that the styling is poor.....it's a thing that was obvious at the time of purchase....sorry!!!...Having said that I believe that it's Savage' standard of workmanship and appearance.

This is why there's a lot of M-70 rifles here and no Savages.....actually I'm finding a lot more value in searching used rifles today...some of Savage's M99 rifles was truly fine guns!!!!

I did look at a similar model in the .243 in store. However, i had to order mine so i didn't get to see it til it came in. Trust me, i am not complaining, just asking if it's right or not to expect those issues. I can't wait to shoot the thing. I am really using this gun as a back up while deer hunting. The stock on this gun looks great however. i have heard complaints about that but this one looks very nice. I operated the bolt in the store on the similar model and it seemed alot smoother than the one i bought. I would imagine there is some break in to deal with.

I do expect the Model 70 to be a better gun. But when comparing the actions, the m70 was so smooth and tight. The savage just seems a little shody in comparison. Not a big deal for what i paid for it. Just want to make sure it's right and that it can be that way otherwise i would return it. I guess that is what i am asking.

Absolutely not.....it only gets worse.

If the gun is considerably worse than the one you looked at in the store take it back and demand a new one. Point out the differences and be firm.

My own experience with my 110, purchased over 10 yrs ago, was that my bolt seemed "rough" and possibly "sticky"...and it did get better over time...I actually sat in front of the tv one night, put on some work gloves, and worked the bolt as many times as I could stand...it did get smoother........It'll never be like my Steyr..but it is passable for putting another in the chamber. Very utilitarian, but not pretty or smooth....I would never call my 110 smooth.
