3 position safety
 

I really like the idea of a 3 position safety...Where the full on-safe locks the bolt, the second postion unlocks the bolt but still disables the trigger, and third position is full off-safe
Other than Winchester and Savage who has this feature? Though I don't own a Winchester, I've always liked this side 3 position safety they have.

Ruger has it. Any of the military mausers have a three position safety.

Sako Model 75 and the Sauer 90 have something similar, safety is on or off with a button to press down to release the bolt when the in the safety on position.

The three major identifying characteristics of a gun designed and first manufactured in 1898 are

1. cock on opening of the bolt
2. staggered magazine
3 dual foreward locking lugs
...yes...the '98 mauser.....which had a three position safety.

I believe the p-17 enfield had a 3x safety as did the springfield 03 and the M-70 winchester and lately the Ruger has one as well.

Why all guns don't have this device is a total loss to me.....

Yep the Ruger MKII's have it, replacing the M-77 Tang Safety.

So Winchester, and Ruger have it....and sako has something like it. I have owned many military weapons, both sporterized and original military configuration, and have always like the 3 position safety...but obviously was hindered by the military 3 position when scope mounting became an issue........
Does anybody know if the addition of an aftermarket, side operated 3-position safety is do-able ....and if so, on what brands can this be done? I would guess you can get anything you want to pay for, but am interested in which conversions are cost effective.

Converting most military mauser actions to a model 70 type three position safety isn't that tough. Check www.brownells.com for the parts.

Vapodog, You might be right about the 1917, but I don't remember it having a three position safety. The embarassing thing is I have 4 1917's sitting at home and can't remember for sure if they do or don't!
