Air Rifles - What accuracy can I expect
I purchased a 1000 fps pellet rifle 3 days ago and I am very dissatisfied with it's accuracy. My old Benjamin can hit a coke about 90% of the time at 40 yards. The new one with or without a scope hits a 14-16 inch diameter group at 40 yards. Are these single break faster ones less accurate. What should I ecpect up to 60 yards. I want a fast one that is accurate to shoot crows off my trash.

My Benjamin is accurate out to 40 and 50 yards it's a .177. Maybe the bigger .22 clibers have less accurate abilities but I don;t know which one you have. Could be the pellets as well.
Maybe something is wrong with it.

Don't expect much at 60 yards. You really won't have enough energy for a crow even if you hit one that far. If you chrono that rifle you probably will find you aren't getting anywhere near that "1000 fps". Most manufacturers have found "1000 fps" is the magic number for sales. You'll find even the fastest airguns have a rainbow trajectory at 60 yards. And even the slightest breeze blows the pellets off target.
As far as accuracy alot depends upon the individual rifle. Actually the high velocity guns normally aren't as accurate as some of the slightly slower guns. I find my better airguns will shoot five shoots groups into about a dime at 25 yards when there's absolutely zero wind.

Several of the "real fast" air guns are flingers.
I've shot a couple that claim to be in the 6-700 range, and they were really accurate.
Maybe try cleaning the heck out of it???

pushing a pellet too fast can definitely affect accuracy.
For instance, competition match .177 air rifles shoot between 500 and 600fps max. While these won't be taking down any game of consequence, they WILL cut the same hole all day long at 10meters.

I just bought the Gammo shadow 1000 and have only shot it at 15yds so far. with open sights I was getting about 1/4" groups with the Beeman hollow point gold coated .177. I'll try it at 40yds and see what happens. I have been very impressed so far.

I learned yesterday that all types of pellets perform differently in all rifles and that you need to match the pellets to the gun. I started and finished this yesterday. I found the beeman gold hollow points are excellent. I was using the RWS pointed pellets. I am now shooting about a 2 inch group at 40 yards without wind. Thanks for the help.
