There has been several topics about the Remington semi auto's. They've received the name "JamMasters" for obvious reasons.Do yourself a favor. If you insist on a semi auto rifle spend the extra money and buy a Browning BAR. You won't regret it.Look into the archives on this forum,I'm sure getting a Rem 7400 will change after reading the comments. On occassions a good one is found but they are few and far between.

ive shot 1 bear and 2 caribou in minus 20 weather with ice and snow with my 742 with not a problem . maybe its a caliber thing . mine is 308. have spent hours at the range over the years and never stripped it full down as far as cleaning. LOVE MINE!

Big Country I guess you got one of the few good ones what were made.Consider yourself Lucky. All the Remington 740's.742's and 7400's leave allot to be desired. They can't come anywhere near a BAR.I HAD two 742's.First chance I got to unload them I did and never looked back.Hope we didn't ruin your chance to sell yours.

Seriously folks. I have had this sucker for 15 years or so. Its killed maybe 30 deer. Never really let me down. But these days, I am into precision shooting. And a 7400 ain't a precision shooter. Its never jammed. And I got a nice reload for it that shoots 1.5MOA very consistently.

Here is what I can't stand. That dad gone forearm screw!! To hunt with the rifle, I have to take to the range and fire 2 or three rounds. Readjust the scope. Then don't clean, and don't take apart. If you tighten down that forearm screw, then POI will change. I have proved this to so many people that swore its the scope, its thier bases, or whatever. I loosen up the screw, and it will hit high by 4", and then tighened as much as possible, and it will hit low. And when you look at the design, its not surprising. Your changing pressure on your barrel.

I have the model 4 wich is somewhere bettween the 742 and the 7400. I use lock washers on the forarm screws and shoot a consistant 1.2" groups. Keep the chamber clean it wont jam. It will shoot my reloaded 130 sp at 3100fps and my 180 gr but not the 220 gr bullets. I have had no jam with any factory ammo. I don't know what all the fuss is. Like I said just keep it clean.

Vapordog, absolutely does shoot under 6" at 100yards. I will guarantee it shoots 3" with remington 130gr coreloks. And with 2" with Federal 130gr Sierra Premiums. And with 54gr of IMR4350 with a 210 primer and 130gr Sierra Gameking, I guarantee 1.5" groups.

I have had two of these 742 and 7400, and none really have an accuracy problem. None of them, that are cleaned by people who know how, have a jamming problem. Just that forearm screw that is the problem. A guy gave me a tip, to use welding tip cleaners to clean out the gas port. Works like a champ.

My uncle has had a 742 for years and has never had any problems. He worked up some handloads with 165 gr. sierra's that will shoot 1 in. groups all day long. He keeps it clean and never has had a problem with it jamming

I was going to buy one for coyote hunting. I want to get a new gun that is different than I already have. I don't like the looks of the Mini 14. I have not looked very hard at Browning. I might just end up with a Ruger No 1 just because its different and I don't own one. Thanks for everyones input.

Boy I traded my 7400 for a Weatherby custom shop gun and the guy gave me 500 in cash. Best gun ever made. :D
