RE: 25-06 for deer
A member of my hunting party uses a .25-06 for blacktail and muledeer. I have never seen him have to use a second shot. Shoots flat and hits hard. If I didnt have my 7mag, it would be my next choice.

Otis...The 25-06 has been a hot topic in here lately. If you search back, you'll see what I mean.
It is one hell of a deer gun. It's superior to the .243, which lots of folks swear by. The 100 gr bullet may be a little light...but why not shoot the 120gr Core-lokt's? That's what my buddy shoots and he never has any problem with deer. Only drawback to the 25-06 is the noise. Man are they loud. I've been around several different models of 25-06 and they've all been loud. Good luck! |
RE: 25-06 for deer
I used to shoot a 257 wby and my hunting partner a 25-06 both using 100 gr ballistic tips.Kill's were every bit as clean and quick as a 270 or 280.With 100 gr partitions I did take a bull elk and my partner a bull moose with these guns although they are marginal for game that large.

RE: 25-06 for deer
I bought one about a year ago and find I use it more than anything else ,Its very accurate and has a milder recoil than my 270.win . Between the two it would be up to each individual which was better

RE: 25-06 for deer
I use a 25-06 for deer and woodchucks! The 120gr Hornandy HP is a great bullet for deer...I also took a New Mexico pronghorn with it this past August
I use the same gun but different scope & bullet for chucks. Last year was my longest...503 yards! Why get a .270 or .280 when a 25-06 can do it all with less recoil? Hunt Safe! Jack |
RE: 25-06 for deer
A GREAT choice for a Deer rifle. I would use the 120 grn bullets. 120 grains @ 3000 fps is plenty good for any Deer Even if you don't handload, there are factory rounds that will approch these numbers

RE: 25-06 for deer
I have used a 25/06 for about 10 years and I think it is a fine deer caliber. I use 117 grain federal premiums which does the job for me. The ballistics for a 25/06 fall between a 243 and a 270, very flat shooting and is by the way almost identical bullet drop performance to my 7mm mag. with 150- 165 grain loads. So I can pick up either, go into the field and don't need to worry about where the bullet will be. The 25/06 is a Ruger M77, with a magnum barrel and the 7 mag. is a Sako Finbear. 25/06 is fast, accurate and plenty of caliber for deer game. Never had to follow one for more than 30 yards. RE: 25-06 for deer
I bought one this past fall. Using 100 gr.
bal. tips between 3,300 and 3,400 fps. my rifle dropped 2 deer in their tracks, right where they stood. I really like this caliber for deer sized game and look out groundhogs this summer. |
RE: 25-06 for deer
i use a 25-06 with 115 nosler partition bullet. pure awesome, you won't track a buck or have a lot of meat damage with this round.i've shot them from 37yds to 370yds and all it takes is 1 shot

RE: 25-06 for deer
The 100 grain bullet should be fine for deer. That is what I use out of a 243 Win and it performs very well.
