How many remember???

I dont know if this topic has come up in here before. But I figure it has.
But here it goes...

How many of you out there remember your very first rifle that you got as a child?..

I still own mine.
It is a old Army training rifle. It is a Wards Western Field Rifle. In the 22
crack shot. It shoots shorts, longs and long rifles. still has the 45CP burnt into the stock and forearm.

My dad gave it to me when I was seven years old, and it still looks and shoots good.

I will give it to my son next year when he turns nine. So that he can hopefully enjoy it for as long as I have.

So what was yours???????????:):)

Thanks
Leroy

RE: How many remember???

I can't relate to the "first rifle" as a kid thing , as around here at that time all of our hunting was done with dogs and shotguns, with the exception of a 22 for bushy tails. But my first gun was an Ithaca 12 gauge single shot. The barrel broke down with a lever action. It was a 30 in full choke , 3 in mag and kicked like a mule. I killed my first deer with it and learned to not flinch even tho I knew I was gonna get the **** kicked out of me. I later traded it off to my regret and I have never seen another.[:o]

Dad gave me his old Stevens/Savage 20GA. bolt action Shotgun. The first thing I shot with it was a trophy Jack Rabbit.;) That was back about 1954. For Xmas.

Mine was an old Western Auto Revelation brand bolt action, tube fed .22 LR that was handed down to me from my Dad when I was just a youngster. I still have the old gun today. To me it is priceless!

I got a shotgun before I had a rifle for good reason I guess. Shotgun was a Win 37A .410 and the rifle was Stevens 22lr bolt that my papaw gave me. In his last few years, he lived in town and still used it to kill stray cats. When the law got to questioning him about it, he decided to pass it down and switch to a pellet rifle.lol

My "very own" first rifle was a pellet gun. My dad gave it to me when i was 9 and that was over 40 years ago. I still have it, and it still shoots fairly good.

My friend got one at about the same time from his dad, and when he would run out of pellets, he'd shoot steel BB's in it. I remember telling my dad that, and dad told me to NEVER shoot steel BB's in "mine", as it would ruin the rifleing. I never did and that's why it still shoots good to this day.

It was a good investment for dad, as "he" still occasionally shoots it to this day!

My first "gun" was a bolt action 20 gauge Mossberg with the old style polychoke. I was the proudest 12 year old in the world. (It was a combined birthday/christmas present......it represented a very large expense to my parents at that time. About a months worth of rent and groceries!)

Sadly I no longer own that particular shotgun. With all of the moves and twenty plus year in the military it was somehow "misdirected"!

My first rifle was given to me when I was 13. It was a Remington 7600 chambered in 6MM. I love that gun and can't wait until the day that my kids will be old enough to shoot and hunt with it.

RE: How many remember???

My first gun was a Rem. model 4 Rolling Block., .22. My dad's dad bought it in the early 1900's for $4.00 and passed it down. The walnut stock split and I made a new one out of maple that looked purty good. This rifle was stolen out of my house in the early 90's along with several other guns. You can imagine how I felt about this rifle getting gone. Have never gotten over it. So, if any of you guys happen to run across it, let me know.

My first rifle was a Remington Model 788 chambered in .243 Win. I still own it and love it. My kids are hunting with it now and will be handed down to the next generation, not because it is an expensive piece but because it gets the job done and also the sentimental value.

RE: How many remember???

Man.....what a great trip down memory lane! My first shotgun was a Single shot lightweight 20 guage. My first hunt I shot a rabbit with it at too close a range and felt soooobad that I destroyed it. Dad have to have a hunting talk with me about why we hunt and that the killing isn't the why, it's the companionship and the learning to respect the life around us, all life. Someday I will do so for my son/daughter.

My first rifle was a Model 94 30-30. I still have both of these rifles in pristine condition and plan to pass them down. Hopefully they will remember me when they hold them in their hands and learn the respect my father taught/still teaches me. Thanks for the post!

RE: How many remember???

Not counting pellet and BB guns, the first "real" firearm that was "mine" was a NEF single shot 20 gauge shotgun with a fixed modified choke that dad bought me when I was 10. I don't have it anymore, and can't for the life of my remember what ever happened to it. I remember the day like it was yesterday. Dad used to take my younger brother and I out and we'd take turns shooting clay birds hand thrown by dad with his Remington 870 Wingmaster 20ga. that was dad's first gun (he'd saved and bought it new when he was 16 years old in 1967). Well, one fine Saturday long ago we'd gone out to shoot like we often did. When we got out to the range dad opened the trunk and we expected to see the familiar leather case holding dads shotgun, but instead found two boxes containing brand new NEF single shot 20 gauges! I don't know who was happier, my brother and I because we now had our very own guns, or dad for seeing the looks on our faces when he opened that trunk. Dad told us that he thought it was time to take us pheasant hunting for the first time, and we couldn't share his shotgun for that.

My first hunt I shot a rabbit with it at too close a range and felt soooobad that I destroyed it.
Don't feel too bad, my brother did the very same thing the first time we went pheasant hunting. We were walking a patch of prairie grass between two corn fields. Patrick spotted a cottontail about 15 feet in front of him in a little open area and got a little too excited. He let it have it with field load of #6 shot and cut the poor rabbit in half, the only thing recognisable was the head, hind paws and tail! He felt bad too, but looking at the bright side, at least the rabbits didn't suffer! :D;)

My first gun was an H&R 410. I only killed a few bushy tail with it and that is about it. I never killed a deer with it, but I scared the crap out of a few. Once I had one deer that I shot at about 5 times with slugs. Limbs falling all around the deer and it just stood there wondering what was going on. I finally quit shooting and said, "Get outa here!" Looking back that is one of my craziest memories from hunting. I quess the deer knew it was safe as long as it stood still.:D

RE: How many remember???

Mine was a marlin .22 lever action. I have worn that gun out two times. I have sent it back to them each time it absolutely wouldnt fire, and they fixed it free of charge. I just wrote them a nice letter saying that that gun has been the best I have ever owned and they fixed it. The last time I sent it in they replaced the barrel, action, trigger mech, receiver, etc. For the most part they replaced everything except the stock. I bet I have carried that gun a million miles.
That was my very first gun of my own. Before that I used my grandads Remington Speedmaster with a bottom eject. That was the first gun my dad had ever shot too. Its still a great shooting gun today.

My first rifle? Hmmm, my first rifle was an old Remington pump .22 that I bought after trapping and working until I was 14. My first gun... I still remember the day my Dad brought it home. It was a Harrington & Richardson, single-shot, break-action .410

RE: How many remember???

The first guns I was able to shoot and clean were only mine for the using. The first gun I owned I bought myself when I was 14 yrs old.
It was a 7 X 57 1903 Steyr Mannlicher bolt action,.....military bolt but add on express sights. It was a new barrel as the original 6.5 X 54 was shot out. I still have it and it shoots much better than I do. The iron sights limit my use (old eyes).

RE: How many remember???

I've still got all of mine-My first shotgun was an Iver Johnson Champion .410 single shot which was my grandpa's before my dad's, then mine...my first rifle was a Marlin Model 99M-1 .22lr, looks just like a mini M-1Carbine-at a glance at least-it was my dad's when he was a kid...my first handgun I bought for myself, a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44mag, none of my "firsts" are going anywhere anytime soon.

I've also got my first deer rifle and the first shotgun that I bought...then again, I've also still got the first chain I wore out on my first chainsaw kicking around somewhere...my first saddle, my first pair of chaps, first pair of boots, first cowboy hat, and the list goes on and on....I guess we're a sentimental bunch around here.

First gun that was mine was a Sav,model 24 ,22/410 over and under,Seems like it cost $39 or $59 back then cannot remember ,but that was a lot of money then.It took lots of digging sang and other wild roots and many odd jobs to afford it,and still have it.
First shotgun I can remember shooting was a stevens 12 guage with a hollow plastic stock, now you talk about kicking,I think everytime I shot it I got a bloody nose.Any of you guys ever had one of those.I remember my Dad borrowed a guys Jap rifle to deer hunt with missed a big buck 7 times with the jap rifle went back the next day with the single shot 12 ga and got the buck with one shot,Big 9 pointer

Red rider BB gun was my first
My dad bought a Springfield 1903-A3 30-06 sporterized for me to use for deer hunting, heavy as a log and kicked like a mule, at least to a 14yr old kid. Shot my first buck with that gun. He had a chance to trade it on another gun and I told him to go ahead. I would trade any gun in my cabinet for it know.[:'(]

Oh DUH! How can I forget my first BB gun?!?! How could I put the .410 before the old Red Ryder? How many grackles and sparrows died at the hands of that little five year old carrying that fearsome weapon? Ah yes, like someone here posted, we must just be a sentimental bunch. As a matter of fact, you've all given me an idea for next weeks article! I cannot guarentee that my mentioning the message board here will get printed (my small, home-town paper tends to look down upon "pops"), but by God, YOU are the ones who gave me the idea! Thanks guys and gals!

How many of you out there remember your very first rifle that you got as a child?..
I bought a Winchester Model 47 single-shot with unfinished stock (walnut!!) when I was 13. It cost $22.05 in 1952, and my father was dead set against it, because he "hated guns". Seems he had a BB gun as a child, killed a bird with it, and never got over it! I had to finish the stock, and used Linseed oil. It came out real pretty after rubbing in a couple of coats of oil each week for about 6 months.

It was a very accurate rifle after I put a Weaver B6 scope on it. It would shoot half-inch 5-shot groups from the bench at 50 yards with Rem. HV HP ammo.

Don't have it any more. Don't have ANY rimfires any more. after owning this rifle for about 6 mos. I bopught a Rem. 721 in .30/'06, and shortly thereafter started reloading '06 ammo, and quit shooting rimfires!

Man-O-Man!!

What alot of remebering.. I have gotten alot of greate replies from everyone here.

Sounds to me that everyone has had a great childhood with very understanding mother and fathers.
But really hope that everybody takes and teaches their own the same way that we grew up..(WITH THE OPPERTUNITY TO HUNT AND ENJOY)

Thanks to everyone who has replied to this.

RE: How many remember???

Mine was a single shot falling block .22 that my dad bought at a garage sale. The front sight was bent on it and it didn't have an extractor. My dad would drop me of at the rifle range with a brick of ammo, I would shoot up the entire brick in an afternoon, but my fingers would be bleeding and my nails would be worn down to nubs from picking the spent casings out of the chamber- but I had loads of fun with it, and mastered the art of Kentucky windage with it.
