Best slug gun under $1000

What do you think is the best affordable slug gun?

I love my Gold Slug gun. Like my 11-87 ok, and can't forget my 870 that has been there long before my semis. Can't talk bad about her (870express), since she served me for years.

You really don't need a semi for a slug gun. A pump is good enough. But the semis take a bite out of the 12Ga 3" slugs.

If you want a pump go with a Remington 870 Express

How about an NEF 20ga ultra slug gun with a great scope of your choice. They are real tack drivers and won't break the bank.

RE: Best slug gun under $1000

I have to say the Remington 11-87 special purpose fully rifled cantilever scoped deer gun. Mine shoots touching groups at 50 and 2-1/2" groups at 100, equipped with a Leupold M8-2.5 fixed heavy duplex scope. It took me a long long time to find the right ammo and for mine it's Federal's 3" Barnes Expander. I shot just about every slug under the sun. Can't go wrong with this gun in my opinion. I'm sure you know shotguns are very finicky on what slug they like to spit out, so don't be depressed if you shoot a lot of different brands before you come up with a winner. With the price of slugs this can be costly. Hopefully your first choice in slugs will shoot right on! At $11.00 a box of 5 for the Federals (that's when I could mail order, the confused state of Massachusetts no longer lets us order ammo thru the mail, now at the gunshop they are $15.00 per box of 5!), needless to say it's not something I shoot much paper with. I go to the range a few times a year with it and shoot a couple boxes and it's always right there. I save the practice for the rifles I reload. Good Luck in your search and no matter which gun you choose, to obtain optimum groups, you're going to need to find the right slug.............John

well for me its my Remington 11-87, special purpose topped off with a Leupold 3-9x40

If you like the pumps then for the money look at the Mossberg 500 slug gun, me and to other friends have them, and they all shot great using Lightfield slugs...Also all i hear is great things about the single shot H&R

Most efficient use of dollars would have to be H&R Ultra Slug Hunter.

For less than the cost of a cantilever scope mount rifled barrel for a pump or auto shooter you can have a complete scoped H&R. No you won't have the luxury of any real quick follow up shots but then again you won't need one.

Why won't you need one? I have hit deer in the heart before and needed a follow up shot. Does an H and R have an excellerater inside that makes the slugs go 400fps faster?

Just giving you a hard time. Some of the HR's I have seen are pretty accurate. No more than my browning gold, but a very nice gun for half the price lower. Just not a fan of the weight.

Another possible choice would be an Ithaca Deerslayer.

BC-Hard time taken. I can see why you'd have that attitude after wasting so much on that Browning. Kinda like buying a Mercedes to run a newspaper route. My hard time-LOL.

The deal with the H&R is that you can comfortably shoot the big magnums without fearing the recoil, giving you more distance and delivered energy to target, without flinching or getting anxious. I haven't seen a finer recoil pad anywhere than what H&R is putting on the Ultra's. The weight help alot with the recoil too. I know. Anyone know who makes these pads H&R uses?

Seriously, the Brownings are too gorgous. I just can't take my Belgium babies into the woods. I'm too scared to get a scratch on one of them. But afield for flyers - that's another story.

A deer hit good just once (12ga or 20ga) will surely die quickly. May run a little bit (dead run on adreniline) but not far, unless he's "Freddie deer" (Freddie Kruger) LOL.

Uncle, in these sad times where hunting land is a premium, and you are forced to hunt in a state like MD. You worry about the follow up shots. For instance I hunt in what they call Blackwater refuge in MD for Sika deer. There is so many hunters, if you see a sika, you better have a follow up. You hear deer running thru the swamp and it sounds like gambit of shooters. Also, sika are hard to take down in my opinion. I have shot alot of whitetail, but haven't seen anything like a sika deer. I shot one 4 times. he walked up to me, and I shot him thru the chest at an angled shot clipping the heart, he ran, and I shot him thru the side, almost a gut shot, and then thru another round and hit him in the rear hind. That son of a gun made it another 200 yards thru the swamp, and was still alive when I got there. I had to finish him off 20 min later. I was shocked. Never had I had to do that for a whitetail.

I'd say from my research, if you want a quality slug gun, and you have a $1000 budget, the Tar-hutn bolt slug guns would be the way to go.

I'll agree with Oldelkhunter, Browning A-Bolt with the rifled barrel. Second would be the Mossberg 695.

RE: Best slug gun under $1000

I owned a Mossberg 695. Great groupings, terrible action. The gun jammed a lot, even after I ordered a new clip. I've always heard that tar-hunt guns were A+ but don't they go for close to $2000?

My first choose would be my Benelli sbe slug gun, best groups ever out of all my guns second would be the Ithaca deer slayer, the guns with fixed barrels shoot the best. Also any of the bolt guns!
