RE: Best slug gun under $1000
Most efficient use of dollars would have to be H&R Ultra Slug Hunter.
For less than the cost of a cantilever scope mount rifled barrel for a pump or auto shooter you can have a complete scoped H&R. No you won't have the luxury of any real quick follow up shots but then again you won't need one. Uncle Matt (in IL) |
RE: Best slug gun under $1000
Why won't you need one? I have hit deer in the heart before and needed a follow up shot. Does an H and R have an excellerater inside that makes the slugs go 400fps faster?

RE: Best slug gun under $1000
Just giving you a hard time. Some of the HR's I have seen are pretty accurate. No more than my browning gold, but a very nice gun for half the price lower. Just not a fan of the weight.

hence the youth model

Another possible choice would be an Ithaca Deerslayer.

BC-Hard time taken. I can see why you'd have that attitude after wasting so much on that Browning. Kinda like buying a Mercedes to run a newspaper route. My hard time-LOL.
The deal with the H&R is that you can comfortably shoot the big magnums without fearing the recoil, giving you more distance and delivered energy to target, without flinching or getting anxious. I haven't seen a finer recoil pad anywhere than what H&R is putting on the Ultra's. The weight help alot with the recoil too. I know. Anyone know who makes these pads H&R uses? Seriously, the Brownings are too gorgous. I just can't take my Belgium babies into the woods. I'm too scared to get a scratch on one of them. But afield for flyers - that's another story. A deer hit good just once (12ga or 20ga) will surely die quickly. May run a little bit (dead run on adreniline) but not far, unless he's "Freddie deer" (Freddie Kruger) LOL. Uncle Matt (in IL) |

RE: Best slug gun under $1000
Uncle, in these sad times where hunting land is a premium, and you are forced to hunt in a state like MD. You worry about the follow up shots. For instance I hunt in what they call Blackwater refuge in MD for Sika deer. There is so many hunters, if you see a sika, you better have a follow up. You hear deer running thru the swamp and it sounds like gambit of shooters. Also, sika are hard to take down in my opinion. I have shot alot of whitetail, but haven't seen anything like a sika deer. I shot one 4 times. he walked up to me, and I shot him thru the chest at an angled shot clipping the heart, he ran, and I shot him thru the side, almost a gut shot, and then thru another round and hit him in the rear hind. That son of a gun made it another 200 yards thru the swamp, and was still alive when I got there. I had to finish him off 20 min later. I was shocked. Never had I had to do that for a whitetail.

I'd say from my research, if you want a quality slug gun, and you have a $1000 budget, the Tar-hutn bolt slug guns would be the way to go.

I'll agree with Oldelkhunter, Browning A-Bolt with the rifled barrel. Second would be the Mossberg 695.
