Default The 260 is Back

The 260 Ruger (new) that I took to the Gunsmith got back the other day. He did a great job on it. The triger is about 3.5 lbs with no creep or travel at all. I put my new Luepold M8 4X33 scope on it. That should be about a perfect setup given the range of the 260. I quess a little more power would be nice for hunting Pronhorns but I think the 4X will be ok. I have a 3x9x40 Luepold Rifleman on layaway at Wally world I could put that on it if I go for pronghorns this year. I do have a 3x9 VX-l on my 257 Roberts which would also do a good job on the prarie goats. I will use the 260 mostly for Mule deer at ranges from 125-225 yards. I will start out trying the 120 grain Ballistic tip but may go to the 125 grain Partition. If used for Elk then the 140 grain Barnes X bullet will be my choice and has accounted for one good elk in my older Savage 260 rifle that I traded in. The new 270 WSM might be better for elk if with the Fail safe bullets or the nosler accu-bond. Have a good day. Spring is comming as the snow geese are ariving here by the thousands.

James B I have been gun shopping and wanting a .260...but I cant make up my mind between a .260 or a 7mm-08. I dont handload as of now and the ballistics on each look good. What do you think...handloading and off the shelf? Which gun would be better or would it be one of them flip a coin deals?

Without reloading I would have to go with the 7mm08. I am sure there are more factory loading available for it. The 7mm08 would be a more versitile rifle as well. The 260 will do deer and even Elk but the 7mm08 would do it a little better. I have a 7mm08 Savage Scout rifle as well as the 260. When in doubt, GET BOTH. A habit that I have that the wife does not approve of. I can't even compare it to her needing a bunch of cloths or jewlery. She has one dress one watch and one rifle. 250 Savage in the 700 classic.
