Weatherby Super Varmint Master

I picked up my Weatherby Super Varmint Master in .223 today, topped with a Leupold LRT 8.5-25X50, and I am wondering about ammo.

I shot some break in rounds and shot one group, it was gusty at times with 10-20mph winds, with some Winchester 50gr ballistic tips that measured a shade over 1/2" at 100 yards, any thoughts on bullet weight or ammo choice?

I am going to use this gun for plinking, longer range varmints and hopefully a prairie dog hunt this summer.

I am sure the gun and I have some room to improve as I get used to it and find some ammo it likes.

The gun has a 1:12 twist.

Damn, how much does the gun have to like it's ammo??? Sounds like you found a pretty good combination already. The 50 grainers will work fine for plinking and 'dogs. Another you might try is the Hornady loads. They have a bullet similar to the SST that is designed for groundhogs and is devastating (I forgot the name of them, but they have the same red poly tip).

My old Remington VSSF in 22-250 shot 1/3" groups and a 6 shot 4" group at 600 yards with the cheap 55gr Winchester loads, I had the barrel cryoed and a trigger job done. I'm just hoping for a little better performance in a rifle that cost twice as much as that Remington, should have kept it.

Not to sound rude, but you should have kept the Remington!!! Spending more for the Wby. name will NOT get you a better shooting gun!!!

Of the hundreds of guns i've sold or owned, on the average the Rems always out shot the other production rifles!!! Rem have good bbls, a fast lock time, and it's an easy action to bed, all that adds up to excelent out of the box accuracy!! I've NEVER seen a "tuned up" Wby. out shoot a "tuned up" Remington!!

My next rifle will be a Weatherby Mark V Super Varmint Master Single Shot in a 220 Swift. I can just taste it!!

I know a guy at the range who has one who shoots .6667" groups at 300 yds. with hand loads. Good luck with your new rifle.
