OK i made my decision....
 

ok guys ive decided just to get a 17hmr as shots will be under 100 yards and ill be able to use it more for jacks, crows, squirels, etc.

ive been lookin round on some sites and the most talked about r the marlin 917v and the savage 93r-17 fv...i guess both of these have heavy barrels, they both weigh the same but the marlin has a monte carlo stock which is the only difference i can see...

in canada the marlin is an xtra $50 but i think its worth it for that stock...

so i was just wonderin which one of these guns usually shoots better, more reliable, built better, functions better, and has a good trigger.

I don't have any experience w/ the guns you mentioned but I do have a .17 HMR in a Ruger VMBBZ. It has a matte grey finished stainless barrel and action and a grey laminated stock. I have a 4x12 power scope on it. I had it out last week to sight it in and got some 3 shot groups slightly under 1" @ 100 yds. even though the wind was a little gusty at times. The only thing I didn't like about it was the heavy trigger, so I ordered a Volquartsen sear and spring and now it has a nice, light 2# trigger on it. Can't wait to get back out and shoot it again. If you get a Hummer, you'll love it, I guarantee it!

I was upstate with a friend of mine two weekends ago and in an uncharacteristic move, bought the Marlin 917V after my buddy's gun guy talked it up so much. (I usually do a ton of research before my firearms purchases...)

I am NOT dissapointed. The Marlin is beautiful to look at, has a quality fit and finish, is very reliable and from the the few round I've fired so far - it's a shooter. I too like the Monte Carlo stock.

In terms of a scope, I bought the BSA Sweet .17 - literally made for the HMR. It was a little more money, but I love the idea of literally just dialing-in your range and holding dead-center on the cross-hairs.

However, in all fairness to Savage, I have a 12BVSS in .22-250 that I absolutely love.

Both are made in the USA, and from my experience with the two vendores, both will be extemely reliable, are very well made and will be excellent shooters. Pick whichever one you like better. You won't be disspointed be either.

A goog friend of mine bought the Ruger and the Savage. His Savage shoots a great deal better than the Ruger. Someone else might buy the same two rifles and get opposite results, but based on his rifles I'd buy the Savage. Neither had great triggers. I worked on both triggers for him and was able to get a better trigger on the Ruger, but the Savage still beat it accuracy wise.
