Purchased Used Rem 270

I just bought a used Remington Model 700, in a 270. I plan to put a 3x9x40 nikon buckmaster scope on it that I have already. I'll prolly go with leopold mounts. Right now it has some kinda funky see thru mounts on it with a simmons scope. I would like any input from anyone that has owned one of these rifles. Also I am wondering what kind of factory loads to start with. As well as any comments as to how the 270 performs on whitetail deer.

The rifle will surely shoot well, if you find a load that it likes.

The .270 is hard to beat for whitetails. I personally like a soft pointed bulled in the 150gr range.

Bought a new Synthetic ADL in '97. I have never fired anything but Federal Classic Hi-Shok 130's and the first 2 shots I ever fired went through the same hole at 50 yards. Needless to say it groups em almost through the same hole at 100 all day long and I have never had the urge to try another load in it. I probably cleaned the barrel for 2 hours or better before I ever fired a shot and cleaned it thouroughly after each of the first 5 shots and every 3rd shot after that to around 25. I can shoot diff lot #'s of that load and also get the same results. I love a 270!! :D

I don't personally own a 270 but i have several friends i reload for that shoot that caliber. They have had great success with the Hornady 130grn SST on deer. They started out using the SST factory loads and when i started reloading for their rilfes they wanted to keep using that bullet due to it's performance on deer. The 270 is a great caliber.

I've had a .270 in the rack for about 20 years, and I killed at least that many deer with it. My favorite whitetail load is the Winchester factory 130 grain Power Point. There is no need for the premium loads or a heavier bullet, unless you're going after bigger game. All the deer I've shot with it dropped within 50 yards, if not on the spot.

Congrats on your purchase of a fine rifle. It will shoot good with most any factory ammo, some will just be a bit better than others, so thats why you have to experiment. I agree that unless you are going after larger game than Whitetails you don't need to buy premium ammo.

The 270 is one of the all time favorite calibers (since around '54 anyway). I think that's when it came out. It is an excellent whitetail cartridge. I can't give you too much info on factory ammo but I'm sure any of the reputable brands like Remington, Winchester or Federal would suit your needs just fine. I'd recommend the 130 gr. loads however. These tend to shoot better than the 150's. But try both the 130's and the 150's and see what shoots best out of your rifle.
I handload for my .270 and it really likes the Nosler solid base boattails in front of 55 gr of IMR 4350 powder.
