.270 or 22-250

which is better over all for all around hunting (deer down to chucks) and which has the better trajectory and ballistics tests?

Pick the .270 ... the 22-250 for deer is a little on the small side. You might want to look at the .243 if you are only want one rifle. The .243 has a wide range of loads to buy and is not a bad little deer rifle.

A 90 grain bullet from a .270 is a sight to behold when it hits something solid. A 270 will almost do it all.....and you can use light enough bullets to varmint.....just dont try to save the pelts...lol.

Definetly the .270. It will handle anything from moose down to chucks and do it well. It is definetly one of the most versatile catridges made.

Another vote for the 270. I wouldn't use a 22-250 on deer.

If those are your only two choices, go with the 270. But, like downwind said, the 243 may be the best round to fit the bill. The 22-250 will kill deer, but I think that we owe too much respect to the deer to use a "marginal" caliber. just my .02

lets say i did go with the .243 what would be a good overall bullet weight for deer down to varmits?

RE: .270 or 22-250

Anything from the 80 to 100 grainers will do nicely.

Out of the two you mentioned, 270 definetly. A 243 would be a good choice also.

Of the two calibers you mentioned, go with the .270! No deer deserves to be shot with a .22!

.270 is an awesome deer rifle, but the 22-250 is not big enough for it, but it is an awesome varm rifle. i would get a .243 and call it a day, or get one of each!

Sounds like you would like the 243Win or the WSSM.

Are you serious? Hope you weren't really considering the 22-250 for a deer rifle.

It's not. Too fast and WAY too light. I've chased 2 deer shot with a 220 Swift (real similar) and they ARE NOT deer calibers.

Go with the 270!! Or a .243 or .25-06. Those will all do the job.

For one "all-around" gun you'd be better off with the larger caliber. I have a .30-06 that I got as an "all-around" gun and although I have used it on coyotes, it isn't a varmit caliber, and I'm now looking at .22-250 or .223 for that. If I had to pick one, I'd go .270win it'll take just about anything you'll want to, but beware that you'll soon want a smaller caliber for varmits.

RE: .270 or 22-250

The .270 is far more versatile than the .22/250, which is basically a varmint rifle. although it will kill deer OK with the right bullet, using it for deer is illegal in many jurisdictions, which prohibit calibers under .23" for game larger than coyotes! Yes, you CAN blast varmints with the .270, although it is a bit of an overkill to do so!!

RE: .270 or 22-250

Well, marine. You qualify on the range out to 500 yds with .223 to KILL a MAN. A .22-250 DOES effectivly kill deer every year for those who know how to shoot a gun accuratly and make well placed shots. I have one and love it. I also shoot the .243. Most of my .22-250 shots are head shots. I'm always practicing and do my best to only shoot when I "know" I'm going to hit the mark. But I will say the the avarege Joe should stick to something a little more potent than a .22-250. Like I said, practice, practice, practice. .243, 6mmAI, .308, 7mm-08, and yes, .270 are all great calibers for deer and yotes. I'd lean towards the .308 for an "all purpose" deer and chucks.
