RE: What would u get!

First off, I'm not a huge fan of 7mm mags, I've owned most SAAMI 7mm mag, all except the 7mm-08, the 7-30Waters, and of course the "new" 7mmWSM...I've never felt that they're really worth all the bang, yes they're rather fast and pretty powerful, but when it comes down to it, I can't really hunt anything any bigger or at any farther range than I can with say a .308win, which isn't going to be nearly as hard on my shoulder. It's kind of an efficiency thing (nothing to do with powder efficiency mind you), a .308win (or .270, 30-06, 257rob, etc) and the 7mm mags have the same practical field performance, but kick for kick, the .308win is more "recoil efficient". If I want .338win mag recoil, I'll shoot my .338 (or one of my "safari cartridges"), but it can hunt bigger and better things, so the bite goes up on both ends, not just mine.

To each his own however, I've also got no use for a ferrari (porche man myself), that doesn't mean I would like to see them taken off the market. The 7mms have a strong following, and they have their place, just not in my safe anymore. We don't all have to like the same kind of pie.

On to the question....

Like I said, I've not owned a 7mm WSM, I've shot them a bit, never chrony'd one though, but tests I did with 300's in Win mag and WSM proved that in standard rifles, there was virtually no difference in performance, some loadings had an edge in one, some in the other, and never was one so much more powerful that there would be any difference in field performance....but, when I chambered both in a compact rifle, the .300WSM only lost about 300fps average going from 26" to 16.5" bbl, while the .300win mag lost nearly twice that much on average (all testing done with factory loads, comparisons based on brand/model/weight to brand/model/weight, i.e. I didn't compare the fastest .300wsm with the slowest Win mag.)

I would certainly imagine that this has more to do with the case, rather than caliber, so this "conservation of velocity" should be common to all three WSM's.

I'd definitely get the WSM if you're considering a compact. If you're getting a full size, think about what you're going to be doing with it...it may be a minimal difference really, but depending on what you want to hunt might dictate what bullet type you'll want, and if what I've heard is true, you're going to want the RM for heavy bullets, although I don't really know what game is going to need the little extra energy conservation, if you need more than a 7mm WSM, you're likely going to need more than a 7mm Rem mag too.

Nomercy. Some good points. I don't like the 7Mag one bit. I have had five of them. (I am a slow Learner). Its one of those cartridges that I wanted to like in a bad way. However the blast and the recoil for what you get out of it just never impressed me. You are certainly correct in your view of the 308. Out to 400 yards it will take most NA game cleanly and without the fuss and recoil of some of the big guys. I am just starting to shoot my new Browning A-Bolt in 308. By what I have seen so far, it may replace many other guns in my arsenal. I have yet to fire my new 270 WSM.

I would go with the 7mm Rem Mag between the two, it's been around longer and will probably be around longer than the Shorty. I think that more people want the .270 WSM, and they are too close to keep both around in high surplus.

I love my 7 mm Rem Mag. But I am thinking of having it rechamberd to the STW pretty quick though. I couldnt tell you about the new WSM rounds outher than seems to be the new craze.

Personally I prefer my 7mm-08 Rem for the type of hunting I do and have no room for a 7mm Mag of any sort.
