.17 Long Rifle

Hornady has announced the creation of the .22 Long Rifle necked to .17 caliber and velocities of 2,200'/sec.......

I'm not sure who is making rifles for this, but I'm definitely going to find a single shot .22 and rebarrel it as soon as ammo hits the shelves.

I wouldn't mind having a .17HMR, but a .17LR just doesn't trip my trigger (pun intended:D). I can't see the ammo being much less expensive than the HMR if they use the premium varmint bullets like the V-Max. I've got a feeling that Hornady has let their marketing dept. run hog wild in the last couple years. The .17HMR has been a stunning success, but now we have the .204 Ruger, and soon a .17LR...I guess I just don't see these as anything more than the firearms industry trying to be "trendy."

I think I'll stick with the old reliable .22LR for small short range shooting and pick up the 22-250 for anything bigger than a rabbit or farther out than 75 yards or so. The .22LR may not be a screamer, but at $1.50/50rds you can't beat the economy.

Well I think it might have a chance if they can keep the price of ammo less than $2 per box of 50. The .22 LR is not a powerhouse or a long range cartridge. in .17 cal it would be a little flatter , but still not a long range load. It might be a tack driver just right for popin squirrels, and small game under 50 yds. The .22 LR has been around for a long time and with hiper velocity loads the only niche I see for the .17LR would be that the cartridge gave a higher velocity and was more accurate than the hiper velocity .22 loads. But for general plnking you would be hard pressed to beat the current .22LR.IMHO
