.300 ultra mag ammo help
 

Just got me a Browning A-bolt 300 ultra mag for my first elk hunt this fall in Montana. I've found four ammo loads, a Rem. 180 gr NP; a Rem. 200 gr NP; a Rem. 180 gr Scirocco; and a Federal 180 gr TB. Any recommendations on which load would be the best? I'm going to probably try two of them and see which one groups the best but I was hoping to get some "first hand" help on actual stopping power and performance.

My Rem. modle 700 BDL SS loves the NP Balistic Tip 180 gr., and the Scirocco 180 gr..... They both group very well in my 300RUM. They hit like a train .

My Rem Mod 700 BDL S/S 300 RUM loves Nosler Partition in 180 Gr.
Cloverleafs at 100 yards and the 5 Elk I have shot all went down within 10 yards;)

I have no exp. with elk yet but my a-bolt in .300 rum. shoots very well with the 180 gr. np. I would love to find a source for the federals to give them a try. Nothing against the reminton ammo, just would love to see what the feds. do in my gun. The 180 NP really slam the deer to the ground though. Good luck in what ever you decide.

WIbucksniper, Cabelas has the Federals in the 180 gr. TB (Trophy Bond). Like I said I haven't even shot my rifle yet, but I think I'm going to give the Federals a try along with the Scirocco 180 gr. I've shot the Rem. NP's in my .280 but don't know anything about the Scirocco's. The best description on Scirocco's is that they are mainly a "speed" bullet. Is this correct and if so do they hit as hard as the NP's? Thanks fellas for the help so far, you've probably already saved me a couple of boxes of shells:D:D:D.

I have seen limited results of game taken with the 150gr -7mm scirroccos and I have mixed feelings about them.They did expand well and hold together but they do seem to expand an awful lot which limits penetration on larger game.They also tend to cause a lot more copper fouling than other bullets.The worst problem however is that although they do shoot well in some guns ,many guns including my own,won't shoot them accurately.
I have taken five elk and two moose so far with my 300ultramags using 180gr ballistic tips.The results were good but I am looking forward to trying the new 180gr accubond in my 300ultramags when they become available in canada.The idea of ballistic tip accuracy and ballistic co-efficient combined with a bonded core that holds together and penetrates like a partition would seem to be the best of both worlds.

I would go with the Rem. 200 gr. Partition. That bullet is suppose to be traveling at 3025 f/s 4063 ft/lb. Good luck.

I have had two 300RUM's. Neither one of them liked the Scirrocos. 3" groups. It is very common for alot of 300RUM's not to like the scirroco. This gun loves matchkings and 200gr Partitions. Here is handloaded Partitions on Sat. at 100 yards. I know handloaded data don't help you but as I recall I took some factory 200gr on a moose hunt a few years ago. They shot 1.1" groups.

I agree...at .300 RUM speeds I'd be using the larger bullets.
