25-06 Knockdown Power?

Does the 25-06 have good knockdown power on deer and black bear inside of 100 yds.?

Sure, anything flying over 3000fps with a 100gr bullet has alot of energy. There is more rifles on the market with more. But the 25-06 is a cooker.

That was my decision to buy a 25-06. I am going to purchase one in the next month or so for deer, antelope and coyotes. There are good bullets out there for it too.

the 25-06 is a great choice for deer out to 300yds. There are few calibers that can shoot a 75gr bullet @ 3500fps then turn around and shoot a 120gr bullet @ 2900fps. I bought mine for coyotes & deer, I have been very happy with it thus far.

A friend of mine I hunt with has a 700 25-06 and it is zeroed at 300 and has taken lots of deer well past 450yds. I think his farthest was 560 yds this season.:D

I have a Smith & Wesson model 1500 in 25-06. My deer anchoring load is a 115 gr. Winchester Ballistic Silvertip. I have other rifles chambered for the 280, 257 Roberts, 308, 30-30, 30-06, & 300 H&H Mag. None of the rifles listed kill deer as quickly. I honestly don't no why. It really doesn't make sense. The 25-06 with the load mentioned almost always leaves the deer on the ground at the spot that I have shot it. These are heart /lung shots and not spine shots. The other calibers kill them they just seem to run 40-60 yards before piling up. Like I said it doesn't make sense. I have a chronograph and my 257 is only running about 110 fps slower with the same bullet and it doesn't drop them immediately like the 25-06.

As for black bear I would probably opt for one of the controlled expansion bullets available from Federal. This may not be needed but I like to be sure.

I agree with everyone else, the 25.06 is one awesome caliber, it's a flat shooter with light recoil that hits the target hard. Joyce Hornady killed a cow elk with a 25.06 when they were testing the 120grn HP and although it wouldn't be my personal choice for bear or elk i wouldn't be scared to shoot either with it. I have other calibers that i've killed deer with but none of them seem to kill as fast as the 25.06. The deer i've shot with it have dropped like they were struck by lighting no matter if they are 50yds or out past 300yds. The next one i shoot may run but i've yet to have one run after the shot and it's amazing how quickly they vanish out of the scope when you pull the trigger. I have several different bullet/loads worked up that i use. For punching paper or varmits is use the Hornady 75grn v-max and the Sierra 75grn HP. My main deer load is a Speer 120grn Spitzer and it does an excellent job.
