low, medium, or high rings??
 

I just bought a VX-II 3-9x40 for my T/C Omega. I have never owned a scope before and was wondering what size rings I should get and what are the advantages of each. Any thouhgts and/or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

By the way I bought the scope for $218 at the Spartsman show in Harrisburg PA. A steal for this scope in silver finish I thought.

Probably Medium. Here is what you do. Go to Leupold.com and go to the section about ring selector. They will ask you step by step your gun, and all.

Leupolds ring selector says Low. I guess it is a matter of preference. For a newbie to scopes the medium is more user friendly?

The Rule is to use the lowest rings possible so you can plant your face firmly on the stock...aids immeasurably in accuracy and allows quicker shooting.

Since it's a 40mm on your Omega, I'd go with Medium rings.

Ring height is different for these reasons:

1) Different objective diameters require different heights for clearance, i.e. you won't be able to mount a 52mm glass in low rings because the objective bell will be pushing into the bbl.

2) Different people hold guns differently, I've seen some people use high mounts with small diameter glasses because of the way they position their head on the stock, some stocks make it hard to get down low enough to use your glass, and some people position their head more upright than others.

SO, find the minimum height that will allow your glass to mount, and then try it on, if it feels too low, then take them back and get a higher set, if it's too high, add a cheek piece to your stock.

I just mounted a 2-7x33 Leupold on my Omega and I used medium Weaver rings. The main reason was I had an extra set laying around, so I mounted them and they work great. You can probably get by with low but you may have to remove the rear sight, especially if you use flip open scope caps.

Go with low if at all possible. For best performance you alway want to get the scope as close centerline of bore as possible.
Only go with to the higher rings if your position on the gun is unconfortable and you must move head to see thru your scope. you should be able to mount a rifle like a shotgun where no head movement is needed and your eye comes right in correct position with mounted

Like ruddy Duck and Nomercy says. The only hassle I've got with higher mounts, which I prefer for myself, is that they tend to catch a lot more brush than the lower mounts.

I would call Leupold at 503-526-1400, and let them know if you are going to put flip cap lens protectors ect. Good luck.
