would like your opinion on a rebarreling

i've got two .308 , a winchester model 88 , and a remington model 760 bdl gamesmaster , now i'm not interested in trading either of them as i'm very pleased with thier handling and operating characteristics . what i was thinking of doing was having the remington 760 rebarreled to .358 winchester with a short carbine barrel ( approx. 16" to 18" )

as i said above , i'm not interested in trading either of these , what are your thoughts and opinions on this rebarreling ?? :D and any tips or hints would be appreciated :D:D

Thats an interesting problem you have there. I have no idea how much it would cost to rebarrel a 760, but the 358 Win is a good cartridge. Thought about building one a while back myself on a Savage action but never did.

a new barrel will be about $200, chambering...another $100, bluing...another $65...reinstalling the iron sights.....$75 yes....there are cheaper barrels!!!!

If the desire is for a shorter barrel you can shorten the one you already have

If the desire is for a .358 Win...well...ask yourself what you're going to do with it that the .308 won't do?

I truly understand the wish for a short powerful pump gun especially for woods hunting....but it's going to be fairly expensive....
It's your money.....

Hi whelen36,

You could rebarrel your 760 to .358 Winchester and it would make a "dandy carbine" indeed. The .358 Winchester is a favorite of mine and a wonderfully "underated" cartridge. (I wish someone would really plant a boot in my a** for selling the one my wife and I owned......a Savage 99-.358.) But......

Another option would be to attempt to find a 760 or a 7600 chambered in .35 Remington....and have it reamed. I know Grice's Gun Shop (I am not affiliated) located in Clearfield, PA,.....recently.......had a number of these that I believe Remington did a limited run on....for a select few volumn Remington dealers. I don't know how available these still might be....but I have occasionally found 760's in gun shops chambered in .35 Remington. These simply need the chamber reamed.....and maybe switch the magazine to a .308 magazine.....that last point I'm not certain about.

And of course there are a few .35 Whelens around......somewhere? (I use to have one of those....as well.....but no longer do.[:'(] How many times can a guy do something stupid....;)....in the same life time?)

Good luck!

I think for the money you spend you will be in love. I say this from experience as I have a 7600 that was originally in 30-06 and has been converted to .35 whelen. I had the barrel cut down so now that it is 18'' and has been ported. I get the strangest looks when I am at the range, but in the thick cover I wouldn't want to carry anything else. I just think that for the money you spend, you will definitly be in love, but for the price you might be able to find something that also fits the bill.

actually guys , i've allready got about 30 guns , including a re. 700 classic in 35 whelen , a marlin 336cs in .35 rem. , and a rem. m673 in .350 mag. my main reason for this is that i would like to add to my .35 caliber battery and didn't want to get another rifle , i also heard that the only manufacturer making .358 is browning and nobody has been able to find any as of yet.

this was also going to be my first venture into a semi-custom rifle for myself , the only other custom built rifle i've got is a 8mm-06 that i inherited from a family member that was built on a mauser 98 action :D:D

Hi again whelen36,

I see you are from Pennsylvania. I saw several Browning BLR 81's chambered in .358 Winchester at the relatively new Gander Mountain Store in Washington, PA. If you are interested you can go to any Gander Mountain....have them look it up in their system.....and if they are still available they will do an intrastore transfer.

Just for your info!

Dave

P.S. Hey....a guy can't own too many .35's!;)

Hi again whelen36,

It's been several months, (and too many events), to remember for certain. But something in the $600. ,give or take, ballpark if memory serves me correctly.

Please don't quote me on that......but for some reason that figure sticks in my mind. If nothing else log on to Gander's site....and inquire. (Or if you can find an 800 tele #.......give them a call.)

Once again.....good luck!

Dave

Hi again whelen36,

Do you recall ever seeing or reading a book which I believe was entitled Big Bore Rifles? (My copy is buried somewhere since our recent move......I'll try to track it down!)

I distinctly remember an article in there concerning the conversion of a 760 to caliber .338/06. (He primarily wanted a quick firing rifle for deer hunting on Kodiak Island.) The gentleman laid out the requirements and considerations involved in the conversion. And even though you are considering a different caliber....the process would remain essentially the same. (The conversion was done shortly after Reminton announced the legitimization of the .35 Whelen....I remember he purposely chose the .338/06 because he wanted something a "little different".) End results.....he was very happy and satisfied with the conversion!

But if you can track down a copy at a library......or I or another member can locate our copy we might could email the entire article. It might simplify the steps....and/or save you a couple of missteps.

Once again.....good luck!

P.S. I see you have a .35 Whelen in a 700 classic. Yup....the other .35 Whelen I had, (other than my 7600), was a 700 classic. How many times in a single lifetime should a guy NEED A FOOT PLANTED IN HIS RECTUM? I have none of them......now![:'(]

RE: would like your opinion on a rebarreling

thanks again bud ,
i've got a book called big bore rifles , if it's the same one your thinking of it came out in the late 80's early 90's and was a softcover book with i think ( and i'm not sure about this one but ) a remington 700 in .416 rem. firing a round of and the photo was of the bullet coming out of the barrel with the muzzle blast ??

the 338/06 is too long for my 760 , it's a .308 class rifle

, i have a custom built mauser 98 that's in 8mm/06 that i was considering rebarreling to 338/06 but , only because i can't seem to get the hang of forming reforming brass. and the 338/06 is a commercially loaded round now thanks to weatherby

yea , i've got a .35 whelen in a 700 classic , and she's a dream . but i can't understand where everybody says the whelen kicks so hard , firing 200 and 250 grain loadings i honestly don't think she kicks at all :D

i've also got a .350 rem mag in a model 673 that is a dream to shoot , she handled so nicely this past deer season , it's just a shame i didn't see anything to shoot at until the late muzzleloader season ( but that was good too though :D:D )

and a marlin 336 in .35 remington which isn't a barn burner but is in my opinion much superior to other so called brush busters of that day :D:D

RE: would like your opinion on a rebarreling

If you wanted to see some fun kick, you should have tried my semi-custom 7600, it originally was a 30-06 and I had it rebarreled to .35 whelen and had the barrel cut down to 16'' inches. This kicked more then I ever could imagine. Right now it is gettin a KDF muzzlebrake installed, but I am going to imagine it is going to have one hellish muzzleblast. I think it will definitly be a great gun for some close action Whitetail hunting in the thick stuff. I have on top of it a fixed 4x Nikon Monarch, I can't wait to get it back and test it out with some stout 250 grain loads.
