Side by Side shotguns
I am considering purchasing the Baikal IZH43, Stoeger IGA uplander, and Savage Stevens model 411 uplander sporter in 12 gauge with 28 inch barrel. I have narroed my search to only these three. Any info or recommendations about the would be very much appreciated.

If you need to stay within a certain budget fine, but if you're going to do a lot of shooting I'd recommend saving up for a little better quality side-by-side if you can.
I can tell you the Savage 411 is made by the Baikal folks. |
RE: Side by Side shotguns
Theres only two O/U that I'd recommend...SKB and Browning....and yes, there's other good guns out there.....Beretta, Franchi, Winchester, .......

Hey Vapodog,
How about recomending a S&S????????? Mike, Personally, i love S&S's, but i don't think you can get a good shooter for the $$ you want to spend! I've seen a few Baikal O/U guns shoot loose at the hindge pin, so i'd be a bit scared of there S&S's too. Drilling Man |

The only thing I don't like about the Stoeger, is that I think it only comes w/ double triggers. I'm not a big fan of double triggers.

RE: Side by Side shotguns
Actually the Uplander Supreme has a single trigger.

Once you get used to the double trigger you will love it.

RE: Side by Side shotguns
I shoot CAS (Cowboy Action Shooting), so a good shooting unrefined SxS is necessary, 100rnds a day isn't a terrible load for some matches, and practice usually requires more than that...I've had two stoeger uplanders and now have a Baikal (EAA) IZH 28"...I actually prefer my Baikal...the Uplanders I had were double triggers, which I prefer, and this one was too, until I swapped them for the selective trigger in my Baikal Coachgun-a little do it yourself gunsmithing/machining was required-now I can't complain at all about the IZH.
As for quality, it's not hard to tell that the $300 and under SxS's aren't in the same class as say a Ruger Gold label or the like, but they do what they're meant to do-THEY SHOOT, and do it well. The Baikal balances better for me, mine is only a 2 3/4" chamber, which doesn't hurt my feelings-no sense in using heavier loads for competition anyway, and I've never really been sold on the NEED for a 3" shell over a 2 3/4" for upland game, or even ducks and geese-I've hunted them all my life with a 2 3/4" J.C. Higgins 12ga. The finishes on the stoeger and the Baikal aren't really pretty, they're not ugly or uneven, but they don't glow like more expensive guns, and the wood isn't real high grade stuff, but for an economy class shooter, they're great...I actually really like the way my wood looks on my 28" baikal, it's a little different finish than my other one, but I think it's pretty cool, definately has the "rustic" look that I'm looking for in CAS. |
RE: Side by Side shotguns
My apology...you asked for side by sides and I answered over/under.....sorry...
I owned a couple side X sides from Brazil...a 20 and a 410 and both were not to my liking..... The older Stevens you suggested might be a fine gun.....I too want a single trigger... I own a matched pair of Side X Sides from SKB...a 12 3" and a 28 Ga both in sporting clays models and they are superb guns. I also had a 12 Ga model 23 from Winchester that I gave to a kid graduating from college...it was also a superb shotgun. Other than a few used guns.....Stevens...I know of no fine side X sides for under $1,000.....the same goes for Over/unders!!!!!!! |

RE: Side by Side shotguns
you could always take the double trigger out and replace it with a single triggger that is what i did with my parker side by side
|
RE: Side by Side shotguns
The only Stoeger SxS I have seen had a double trigger. I didn't know they made a single trigger. Mu bad. I will have to check it out.

RE: Side by Side shotguns
i have a 20 side by side i shot lots of turkeys with it an grouse , phesants an deer it has two triger i wasnt a fan of it but after i shot 50 rounds with it a day i love the double triggers

RE: Side by Side shotguns
I MUCH prefer the double triggers on all my S&S's. I want the instant choise between "two" chokes, and what better way than haveing one trigger for each choke?? If i have a close shot (open choke), i use the front trigger, if my shot is longer (tighter choke), i choose the back trigger!!!
Now, isn't that easier than trying to move a "selector" (if you have a choise at all) to do the same thing??? It is for me!!, Drilling Man |
RE: Side by Side shotguns
There is something of a mistique of toting a SxS through the game fields or grouse woods. I own a Baikal IZH43 12 ga 3" with 28" barrels, screw in chokes and single selective trigger. I love it. I also own Beretta and Browning O/Us too. I've also owned SxSs from Ithaca and Savage. The Baikal is no Browning or Beretta but it is a good quality gun for its price. I like its balance and the way it fits me and I wouldn't hesitate on buying another.
There's nothing like looking down the valley of those twin barrels on a fast rising cockbird of decoying mallard. |
RE: Side by Side shotguns
Look for a SKB. I think you'll like what you see.As far as I know the Ruger Gold Labels haven't been released yet. Plus the 2 grand for one you need to be serious.
