.22 shorts in a long rifle pistol barrel?
Is it ok to shoot 22 shorts in a .22 revolver that is marked .22 long rifle?

My .22 shoots shorts, longs, and long rifles. But, I really don't see why a short wouldn't work. But if its marked .22 long rifle, then I wouldn't use anything else.

It will work, no problem.

The shorts CAN be shot in a long rifle chamber but I'm not sure why you would want to.The long rifle is a superior cartridge overall.Heres the catch though, the mouth of the short case is set back in the chamber.Extensive use will erode the walls of the chamber and the next time a LR round is fired the case will expand to fill the gap around it.This will make extraction difficult if not impossible. As well, the tiny short bullet will have to jump the gap before engaging the rifling, thus accuracy may also suffer.

Thanks, I kind of wondered about the corrosion thing.

Many guns have been made to handle all three 22 rimfire cartridges so I really don't think a short will cause any chamber erosion, but maybe some lead fouling of the chamber which might cause some problems loading a long rifle cartridge. A problem arises in a semi automatic where shorts won't feed from the magazine and also lack the energy to cycle the action.

You are correct in that many older firearms were rated for all three cartridges, however I do know of one case that this happened and the spent round had to be hammered out with a rod.Its your gun...do as you wish.
Basic firearms safety: Never use any ammo other than that for which the gun was designed! |
