.22-250 questions
 

I have now finally found my offseason project. I wan't to get a .22-250 and do some bench rest shooting with it. Ill be loading for the most accurate round I can get. I don't want to break the bank so to speak but i was thinking of either one of the new savages with that acu-trigger or a browning a-bolt. With the a-bolt will the boss system help out on accuracy after I have a pet load or not. If so by how much and will it be worth the extra money.


What is the best twist rate and for what size bullet. Does anybody here have any experince with any different twist rates? If so what is the better twist?

You might want to consider the new tikka t-3 stainless varmint.Tikka has a great reputation for accuracy and the price is very reasonable.

I've never really believed that the BOSS system truly helped accuracy-it helps YOU shoot more accurately by reducing felt recoil (perceived recoil is another story, but on the bench you'll have muffs and plugs anyway)...I don't really think you'll need your recoil reduced for a .22-250, I really just don't see it.

The Savage is great, I sold two of my old target/varmint rifles and bought two new Savages recently, a 12FVSS .22-250 stainless fluted heavy bbl and a 110 Tactical .308 heavy bbl blued...both are incredibly accurate, I'm going to be putting HS-P stocks on and have at least the .308 bedded-I might fiddle with truing the action/bbl, but it's shooting pretty fine already. The .22-250 is great, I get one ragged hole at 100yrds and snowmen at 150yrds, it's a great shooter, I'm almost nervous about changing anything on it! 1.75" has been my worst group daily average at 200yrds,7/8MOA isn't too bad for a .22-250 at that range, little bullets and wind don't mix, and Kansas isn't famous for being still.

Andy the Boss does work.I have two one on a BAR and an ABOLT.On the A-Bolt I can move the Boss from 2.5 to 2.8 and my groups go from 2+ inches to less than .5 of an inch.The best thing about the Boss is you can use different ammo,weights.just remember your setting for the ammo/load and right it down then find the right settings for another load.I use mind with the CR hunting because the muzzle brake one is so load,if I were doing all my shooting at the bench I would use the MB it reduces recoil a lot.

I simply love my Savage 12fvss. It's the same gun listed by nomercy. The accu-trigger destroys any other trigger i've shot, Tikka included. Don't get me wrong, the Tikka is a great gun, but the savage fixed the one problem they had, the trigger and now it's the king of the hill, or soon will be!

Check out the latest edition of Outdoor Life. They have a roundup of 5 22-250 varmit rifles. The Savage 12BVSS single shot won an editor's choice for being the most accurate with the widest range of factory ammo. I was considering one and am a lot more certain after reading that article.

Thanx everybody for the information. I think I will go with the savage. It seems to be a really good gun, plus the price is pretty good.
