.30-06 and .30-06 Sprg. are the same thing. The Springfield came about because the .30-06 was originally developed as a military round and carried the designation of the 1903 Springfield. In 1906 the cartridge was change slightly and became what we know as the .30-06 today. .30 caliber Model of 1906, and keeping the designation of Springfield because of the Springfield Armory where it was developed. (I think- regarding Springfield Armory). .30-06 is just used as a shorter designation for .30-06 Springfield.

Yes they are the same thing.

The 30-06 was originally called the 30-03 (30 caliber and developed in 1903). In 1906 the Army decided to shorten the neck and shoulder to what it is today hence 30-06 (30 caliber and developed in 1906). The Springfield designation comes from the cartridge being originally developed out of the Springfield armory.

RE: whats the difference between the 30.06 an 30.06 spring field

Well, ".30-06" doesn't have "springfield" in it's name, and ".30-06 springfield" does[&:]...all kidding aside, the guys above have got it right, they're exactly the same thing, ".30-06Springfield" is what SAAMI refers to it as, ".30-06" is what Bubba refers to it as....the biggest thing about the nomenclature that I feel is important is the fact that there are a few different ".30-06's" available, i.e. the "Springfield" and the "Ackley Improved", and a few other wildcats hanging around out there that don't offer any real improvement but feed on the fact that they're "better, newer cartridges, but based on a Classic design"....but whenever someone says they run a .30-06, you can be 99.99% certain that they're talking about a Springfield.
