trap gun?
 

I am gonna get a job over the summer and i am going to buy a trap gun can you guys give me some ideas of a good over and under for trap under 600 bucks

If you plan on shooting trap singles than you really dont need a o/u. Not that they arnt a good gun for the reason but personally I shoot singles and have a mossberg 835 with a 28" ported barrel. It cost around $300 or less. I usually shoot 20's out of 25 with a modified choke. I have put about four thousand or so rounds through it since april and its holding tight as the day I bought it. With over and unders the only ones i can think of off the top of my head is strogers. I havent heard anything bad about them and they usually run somewhare around $400. But if you shop around through used guns im sure you will find something you like and can afford. Try your local gun dealers and www.gunbroker.com. I like gun broker alot they have a good selecton and good prices. Well good luck on what ever you get.

For $600 you are probably going to have to look at a used trap gun. Ones that come to mind in that price range might be a Rem 870 or 1100.1187, Beretta 390/391, well used M12 or possibly a Browning BT-99/BT-100. Look at your local skeet/trap club, most of the time you can find pretty good private deals on used guns.

Look for a Beretta Urika 391 12g, any model with Mobile choke, this was replaced by an 'new' Urika 391 with different chokes (Optima chokes and Optima Bore). The new ones are $900, you can find a year two old model for $600 or so.

Light, fast and low recoil for shooting trap, skeet, 5 stand, sporting clays or field hunting. The o/u is probably not going to be a good choice for high volume shooting at $600

Another consideration - Beretta Pintail (semi - recoil operated for $500 used) or Benelli Montefeltro (semi - recoil - same design - for $600 used). Both are light and shoot great.

Most trap guns shot high to compensate for the lift of the target flight, field guns are will not (usually), either way you get used to how a shotgun shoots.

Im not trying to cause any problems here but the bretta and benelli auto's shoot great but are a big pain in you a$$ when it comes to cleaning. If you dont mind putting up with the frustration they will cycle and shoot great. But for all around ease on doubles the over and under or side by side will work good and are much easyer to opperate.

I don't have any expereince with Beretta's, But Benelli's are not at all hard to clean, IMO. Not as easy as a O/U, I'd agree, but not what I'd call dificult. In that price range, check out the Biakel line. They are imported from Russia by EAA. They are a good gun and look better that all the other "Cheap" shotguns. I know a guy at the club that has over 10,000 rounds thru one in the last 4 seasons and has had no problems! 12, 20, and 410 available!

The beretta is gas operated, functions fine when not cleaned well with the exception of the chamber end area which gets fouled with melted wad material after a day on the range, still functions. That is a prime cause of many cycling issues in semi guns.

The benelli is the recoil, and easier to disassemble for cleaning.

My o/u takes longer to clean both barrels of melted wad material than the 391 or Xtremas I shoot. And there is more to dissasemble on the semi-auto.

Whatever you choose, it has to be cleaned well, and completely cleaned after a few thousand rounds.
