Holy crap.....That was amazing. Would it be wrong to say that it was really cool?

At least it would be if they were Taliban/Islamic Jihad Tangos.

They are enemy casualties of war. Was it "cool"? Not sure that is the right word for it but it is an awesome display of firepower and technical superiority of our military weaponry.

Please don’t misunderstand. I completely support our troops and our mission in Iraq. I know I wasn’t there and I’m only seeing one very narrow viewpoint but, didn’t that look like we just fired on some farmers. I didn’t see any weapons. I did see a cultivated field, a tractor and a couple of trucks.

Anyway not looking to stir up a hornets nest…just looking for your view points

I think the U.S ARMY has better things to do than pick on farmers....It looked like some sort of Mortar or small piece of Artillery that they were trying to use??

Anyone else see that???

I don't know if the information in an email I received concerning the footage is legit but here is an explanation I got;

Friends,

In regards to the little video clip I sent you showing the helicopter
attacking some Iraqi's, here is an explanation of what happened from a
soldier stationed in Iraq. A friend sent it to him, and he e-mailed her
back with this...

The video footage that you sent me was taken here in the Tikrit area. We
were shown it the day after it happened. There was a little more to it
than what was shown in the video you sent me. I think it was classified, so
either it leaked out or was declassed, I highly doubt the latter.... But
here's the synopsis on what occurred: Three insurgents were sitting on
the side of a freeway that US convoys frequent, in the cover of night,
waiting to bury an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) that would later be command detonated and kill unsuspecting US soldiers as they drive by. Well, that AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter, was hovering over 2 KMs away (1.2 miles
observing the enemy's activity with Thermal (heat) vision. The enemy
could not hear the helicopter and had no idea that they were watching. Every
time a car/Humvee would approach, the insurgents would carry their explosives
out into that field, drop it, and run back acting as if their truck broke
down; their typical tactics. When the coast was clear, they would run back out
into the field to get the explosives. Finally, the Apache pilot/gunner
was give authorization to destroy the target. Good job to our Army aviators!
For those of you who don't know what was fired, it was an M230, 30mm
chain gun. As we could all see, it was extremely effective.

I saw this clip on the news. What you don't see here is the R.P.G. laying on the ground.BTW they used the smallest weapon that they have on the chopper.

it is amazing what the technologly we have today. 1.5 miles away and did not hear it? but then again i never had the chance of hearing a ah-64 apache helicopter in flight.
i thought there was something in the geneva convention about using a a limit of a certain caliber /mm size on infantry? i used to work with a guy that was in vietnam and he said when the vietnamese attacked his station. they came over the hill and that was all he had was the 50 cal. so there got to be loop holes.

That is the "strange thing" about the Geneva Convention. Even though you are not allowed "under the convention" to use "expanding point" ammuntion from small arms against enemy combatants. You can drop a 2000 pound bomb on their heads. Or use land mines.....command detonated or "triggered". And even though weapons systems are "labeled as" anti-personnel, anti-aircraft, anti-armor, etc......you use what is available and at hand.

Then there is always the question of law in this regard about another issue. If in fact these "targets" were terrorist.....as opposed to "enemy combatants"....you can use any "d**n bullet you want! May not make a lot of sense.....but since when has war ever "made sense". War happens to be necessary because of the "nature of humankind"....but no one ever said, "it made sense".

Truly strange when you think of it!

What does make sense is this. If these people (targets) where in the process of commiting acts that would endanger and/or kill American servicemembers....I wouldn't care if they dropped a "Daisey Cutter" on their heads!

Well, I know for a fact that we've used things as large as 16-inch naval rifles to fire H.E. at enemy troops, and no-one once complained about violations of any of the Laws of Land Warfare..... and we routinely use 8" howitzers, 155mm artillery, MLRS, 120 & 81mm mortars, etc.

One word WOW. Amazing firepower and thanks for the explantion offered a few posts up. Wonder what the Iraqi death toll was for the war. With that kind of weaponry they had to lose tens of thousands.
