RE: Remington model 788??????
The Rem 788 has a reputation for extreme accuracy...it's a fine horse gun...throw it in the scabbard and go hunting.
Some of them had some feeding problems but with their accuracy nobody ever needed a second shot anyway. The action was used as a benchrest action for a while by the crazies in the tight group circles and still is to some extent. Back in the early '70s they sold (with a scope) for under $125 and today they're (used) ABOUT $300.....WISH i HAD BOUGHT A TRUCK LOAD OF THEM THEN!!!! |
RE: Remington model 788??????
yea what he said. The prettiest ugly rifle I ever owned wish I had never sold mine. I guess I could say that about most of the guns I have sold over the years.

RE: Remington model 788??????
I've owned several 788's in different cals. over the years, and all were good. My mother and i bought one in cal. .243 Win., for my dad many years ago. He used it a huge amount includeing carrying it all over on his ATV. He even once tipped over backwards pulling out a "huge buck" with a Honda 90 3 wheeler, (many years ago, as he has a Yamaha Kodiak today) that he shot with the 788, and broke the stock off it!! Today at age 90, he still sometimes hunts with it, and in fact he shot a big doe with it last year!! It's never failed to function, and as was already said above, they are quite accurate, and a great inexpensive rifle at the time they came out!!
I kind of wish i had kept one in 44 mag, but i shoot left hand, and that's the reason i didn't. Drilling Man |
RE: Remington model 788??????
I had several 788s in the past...and I wish I still had them. I got them in my younger days, and "graduated" to a more expensive rifle later on. They are good shooters! The one I had in 22-250 was one of the best shooting rifles I ever owned.

RE: Remington model 788??????
I have one in 7mm-08 Rem. My uncle gave it to me fter the barrel got ruined in a roof leak accident. I had it rebarreled and it has served me well. Too bad the aren't still making them instead of those 710s.

RE: Remington model 788??????
All of the one's I've seen aren't much to look at, but they are solid guns that tend to be very accurate, you would be well served to pick one up if the price is right (check gunsamerica for a price guide).
DG, I think you're thinking about the Remington 600, and it has the "dogleg" bolt too. The 788's I've seen have iron sights but no rib on the barrel. Gordon |
RE: Remington model 788??????
I've own a couple of 243's and couple of 308's and a 222 and a 22-250 and have to say they all worked well for me. I took some time and redone the stock, added some life to it and a little fancynest and turned the gun into a gun. Taking off all the metal and added a white plastic rim under it, the butt plate off and added white plastic. Turned out not bad...BT

RE: Remington model 788??????
My cousin just called minutes ago and needed $$ so I bought a Marlin 1894 in .357 and a 788 in 7/08 .. both with scopes .. The marlin is in nice shape but the 788 needs the stock to be redone .. but I guess I couldn't go wrong with $300 for both ..Bill

RE: Remington model 788??????
My father purchased a 788 in .243 back in the late 70's for $169 canadian and that included a cheap 4x tasco scope and mounts. He sold it in 2000 for $350canadian.He was happy to have used the rifle for over 20 years and still sell it for more than double what he paid for it.

RE: Remington model 788??????
RonM,
Just had to reply about 760 price and that of a 788. In l973 I bought a new 760 for $85.00 and the same gun shop gave me a price of $78.00 for the 788, I believe it was in l973 also, could have been a little later. dog1 |
RE: Remington model 788??????
Hi usens,
The Remington Model 78 Sportsman is NOT the same as a 788. The Model 78 was a "less expensive" version of the Model 700. If memory serves me correctly......it had a birch stock....instead of walnut. The polish and finish...were less well executed compared to the 700. But it in no way diminishes the Model 78 when it came to performance. The Model 78 was just a 700..."in an ugly dress"! It is a good rifle. Dave |
