Copper stripping
 

What's the concensus on how often to remove copper fouling from rifle bores. I am a bowhunting fanatic and this is not my area of expertise. Shooting is something I do to fill in the time between archery seasons. Some of my shooting buddies use copper stripper religiously when they clean their rifles every time they shoot. Others swear that it will move the point of impact several inches and require another 20 shots to bring it back to where it the scope is sighted. Also, I can find copper deposit in my Bushmaster AR-15 barrel after a few shots. I can run 30 rounds through my .223 Contender and copper solvent patch will come out clean? What gives?

Welcome to the board olddogrib, I haven't had problems with copper fouling.I use Hoppe's #9 when I clean them and they come out looking like a mirror.The patches come out as clean as when I pushed them in.Ruger Redhawk

Sweets 7.62 and barnes cr-10 are by far the best for removing copper.Hoppes and shooters choice are much milder and take a lot more time and effort to get the job done.

Sounds like your Bushy has a rough bore. I have some rifles that never copper foul and a couple that you could put Phelps-Dodge out of business if you went into the copper mining business.
When they do foul Sweats or Barnes CR10 will make short work of removing it.

I found something that will help! Try it. It works.Go to www.storm.ca/~debin666/home.html then click on projects and then bore cleaner. It only cost a few $ and works !

Iosso bore cleaner is good stuff too, not corrosive but cuts copper fast.
