Remington Copper Solid
Having problems with the Remington Copper Solid sabot slugs
I currently use. My Winchester 1300 12ga responds well to them at the range with nice tight groups at 50 yds, but when I double lung a deer it runs off 80yds or better. I grew up shooting buck shot in NJ, so slugs are a new thing for me. I just have a hard time believing a 1oz slug doesn't bring a deer down closer to the place of impact. Any recommendations? Better slug out there? I've tried the Winchester and Winchester Supremes, but they shoot way to eratic at 50yds. Is the use of copper the problem? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. |
RE: Remington Copper Solid
you would be surprised. i have shooting shotguns in my state untill i hunted in maine and found the wonders of thr rifle.
i have taken 4 deer with shotgun. the one that ran the farthest was shot with a rem copper solid ( original design before they where changed ) shot deer at 10 paces and it ran 40yds after getting up. i have also taken another witha rem lead slugger in the same spot i always shoot, the lungs and he ran about 30 - 40yds. now i found out last year that the wonders of how a 30-06sprg 165gr. does better in dropping them quicker and have beter blood trails. i think it is more apon the average i have seen deer drop and where you shoot them. maybe try the lightfield slugs? also how much of a blood trail you getting when you shot that deer? i got very litle when i shot mine with the rem copper soilds. took 2 shots and i saw very little but found a chunk of lung or kidney on the ground. |

What you are experiencing is very typical of shotgun slug performance! They travel too slow to produce much, if any, hydrostatic shock on a par with that produced by a HP rifle bullet. Consequently, shotgun slugs kill more by hemorrage than any other effect. In this regard, they are more similar to a broadhead arrow than to a bullet! An 80 yard run is not bad at all after being hit by a slug! That's why I prefer to use a rifle, even if it has to be a muzzle-loading rifle, anywhere that slug shotguns and/or muzzleloaders are permitted! BTW, I once lived in a county in Virginia where ONLY buckshot was legal, and had the opportunity to observe how this stuff works, or rather, doesn't work, for five consecutive deer seasons. I once saw an 85-pound Virginia whitetail buck travel 1.5 miles from where it had been shot to where it died. It had two 00 buck pellets through its' heart, and three through its' lungs, and still travelled that far. NO BLOOD TRAIL!! Had it not been for the fact that hounds are used to run deer in that county (that's how they hunt deer there!!), that buck never would have been found. There's no doubt in my mind why buckshot is ILLEGAL in most states for deer hunting! Too many dead deer left unclaimed in the woods!! |
RE: Remington Copper Solid
TRY LIGHTFIELD SLUGS. I TOOK A BLACK BEAR ON 12-13-03 HERE IN NJ!!!! I SHOT THE BEAR AT 50yds. IT RAN AT THE MOST 10yds.

RE: Remington Copper Solid
MD, stay with the copper solids. It's not that uncommon for a deer to run 80 yards or so after being hit in the lungs with anything. Iv'e dropped deer stone cold dead with the copper solids at over 100 yards away. A 12 gauge slug has way more than enough "shock" for a deer at 50 yards away. Wait till you hit one right in the heart!

RE: Remington Copper Solid
Worc..
mine was shot in the heart at 10 paces. when he got hit it was like he got lifted up and thrown back about 5 feet and landed on his side. he tried several times to get up and eventually did to fall right in front of me. then ran another 30yds or so. everything in the middle was jelly ( what ever was left in there vital wise ) |
RE: Remington Copper Solid
You know I believe some people just have bad luck hunting deer. As a Carroll County resident also, I have taken 20 deer or so with Copper solids. All has been under 100 yards, and I have never had them walk more than 30 yards. I just think some people its the norm to have a deer run 100 yards. Hasn't happened to me but some guys swear they do. I believe the condition the deer was before you shot has alot to do with it. Was it running. Was it spooked. Was it calm? MD Piney, where do ya hunt? I live in Finksburg. Hunt behind my house and Morgans Run.
Agree on buckshot. Good reason its illegal in most states. Worthless. |

RE: Remington Copper Solid
I quit shooting running animals a long time ago. I know some people have different hunting pressures than I got. And alot of their shots have to be running or spooked shots.

You are wise not to shoot running deer!!! In addition to being harder to bring down, an animal that's pumped full of adrenalin is also a lot tougher and foul tasting when it comes to eating. The longer they've been running, the less edible they become. |
RE: Remington Copper Solid
Thanks for all the feedback on the use of slugs as well as the CopperSolid. Seems from the majority of the posts that an +/- 80 yd run isn't too bad when harvesting a deer with slugs. In regards to my scenerios I'm sure I've just had some bad luck and other deer will fall closer to the place of impact. Might try the Lightfield slugs for the heck of it though. I've noticed positive comments about these on this thread as well as another I started regarding the H&R Ultra Slug Gun.
Hopefully in the near future (9/10 Sept) I will be able to post better results with the CopperSolids. We have two extra days of gun season here in MD. thanks again for all the feedback. MD Piney |
RE: Remington Copper Solid
I use to shoot the copper solids, but had to switch because the lack of a blood trail. I'm from soutern In where all we can use is slugs/smokepoles/arrows or handguns. I shoot a Rem 1100 with a rifled barrel topped with a Burris scope. Shooting the copper solids I was able to shoot a 2to 3" group off a bench at a 100 yards. I thought I had the perfect match, until I started killing with them. I know dead is dead but a marginal hit for whatever reason and not having a blood trail could be detrimental. 4seasons back I shot a 7 point at roughly 100 yards square thru the lungs. He went 50 to 60 yards and piled up. The blood trail was minimal and I didn't pay much attention that year. The following season I was in a blind with my 2 boys ages 5 and 7 and shot a 8 point at about 40 yards. The buck was in a cedar thicket that was growed up and when we started to track him I could only find a few pindrops of blood. Thanks for them boys and there keen eyes we managed to track him some 100 plus yards before finding him. When I field dressed him his chest cavity was plum full of blood. The shot was broadside lower 1/3 and just missed the top half of his heart punching both lungs. I still didn't think much of it, dead is daed. At work I overheard a conversation with some boys talking about shooting deer and not having much of a blood trail. I joined the conversation and they was talking about the copper solids. That spring while at my boys baseball game the subject came up with the same results. I still wasn't totally convinced, especially with the groups i was shooting until 2002 season. I shot a big 9 point quatering away at about 15 yards. I was in a treestand and the slug went in at his back rib and exited opposite side just to the side of his waddle. The buck went about75 yards and stood for what seem like 5 minutes ( most likely a minute) and I let him have another one. The buck dropped and was done. I got down from my stand and went straight to him. After admiring him I backtrailed him to where I hit him the 1st time. The woods was open hardwoods and I followed his exact tract from the scuffled leaves he left. All I found was a chunk of tissue and some hair where I shot him. From that point I changed to the lightfield slugs. I don't get the groups as with the solids but I had to change. I took a 8 pt this season but I hit him square thru the shoulders and he dropped dead in his tracks so I couldn't judge the kind of blood trail. I killed quite a few dear using the rem slugger and other foster style slugs and always had a killer blood trail. Don't know if this helps ya out but this has been my experience using the copper solids.

RE: Remington Copper Solid
I use lighfields out of my H&R , and never had one run more than 50 yrds.
If you want a higher velocity try the Winchester Partition Golds which if I remember correctly are around 1900fps. |
RE: Remington Copper Solid
I couldn't get the copper solids to group out of my Hastings barrel. But I have been really happy with the Federal Barnes Expanders in 3/4 oz. 1900 feet per second and less than 3" group at the range at 100 yards. The 9 pointer I shot this year dropped in his tracks. The higher velocity should let a guy shoot over 100 yards, but I havent grouped it farther yet....that will happen this summer. Guys I have talked to who are shooting this load are saying 6" groups at 150 yards. Wow.
