338 Ultra Mag ..who has one?

Ok I am more than interested in this cartridge . Since it recoils significantly more than my 338 win(I am assuming this) i would probably do my best shooting with a muzzle break(this is a love/hate) . How well do these things shoot and what is the bullet weight your using... I am thinking 225 grain accubond to really nail big things...

I had one for kicks for a while. Just really couldn't find a use for it since my custom 300RUM is my gun of choice for big big game. And mine wasn't nats butt accurate either. She had a bite and half. With the 225Accubond she should do well. I have had good luck out of them. I might forget about the break or at least have a cap for it so I can take it off and on. I believe a guy that shoots as much as you can handle the recoil. But I have to admit, mine was 11lbs. Makes a big difference as you know. About the same difference in recoil as comparing a 300Win mag and 300RUM with the same size bullet to comparing a 338win mag and 338RUM. So if you have experience with a 338Win, you might know what i mean.

Yep it really shouldn't be a whole lot more recoil than a 340 weatherby which I also owned but wouldn't shoot that well only one of weatherbys I owned that didn't but back when I had it I didn't reload much at all. I just don't have the time anymore to shoot as much as I used too that is the reason for the brake...hunting it would come off . A gunsmith friend that does a lot of Elk hunting told me that a 340 weatherby really gets an Elks attention even more so than a 338 win and this is a little more gun than the Weatherby and the price is right on a almost new one that it may be worth experimenting with.

You know I saw a few times where a break can change groups and POI. Makes sense though. If machined off by a hair, might cause some turbulance on the bullet like messing with a crown of a gun. I have been working on a load for my friend's 300Weatherby. I shot it and it was getting 2" groups or worse. I took the break off and that shrank to 1.2" or so consistently and changed POI by 3MOA at 100 yards. After working on this gun, I decided against a break unless I have too. Everybody looks at me like they hate me at the range. Don't blame them. Also didn't like the clean up unless you take it off.

RE: 338 Ultra Mag ..who has one?

My brother-in-law has one, a Remington African Plains Rifle. The recoil is noticible but not terrible. I loaded him some 200 gr Hornadys. Very accurate, less than 2" at 200 yds.

He shot a cow elk and broke her back, so not much of a test there.

He shot a little deer with it in November. Caught him head on. The bullet went right down the spinal column, penetrating one vertebra after another, about 9-10" of bone. Bullet was lodged in the backstrap, have not weighed it yet to see home much weight it lost.

Hope this helps.

You might want to consider that if you need something more than a .300 magnum you really need a .375 magnum.

I'm removing the barrel from my .338 mag and converting it to a .375 Taylor.
