300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
If you had the choice which caliber would you go with for a new rifle?
|
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
Personally, I'd opt for the 300 RUM. However, either is a solid caliber. I have a feeling that both will be around for a while, so ammo won't be all that hard to find.
|
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
The weatherby outperforms the ultra mag. If you really want a superior 300, go with the 30-378 weatherby, makes the 300wby and 300 ultra look puny.

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
Niether. I would stick with the 300 Win Mag.

Hunh? If I were choosing between the two I would buy the Ultra Mag. I actually have one of each in identical Remington 700 BDLSS rifles. I bought the Weatherby before the Ultra Mag was introduced. THe UM has several advantages over the Weatherby besides it's superior ballistics. Brass and loaded ammo for the RUM costs a fraction of what it does for the Weatherby. Headspacing from the shoulder instead of a belt lends itself to superior accuracy, and without a belt your brass should last longer. |
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
If you handload go with the 300 RUM. It will out perform the WBY slightly ballistics wise. But I'm with frizzellr on this the standard 300 WIN handloaded can do just as much as the WBY or RUM with cheaper brass and less powder.

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
I have yet to see my freind's 300Weatherby outperform my RUM. Weatherby is not far behind by only 100 to 300 FPS. I like both guns, but getting away from the pure emotion of the subject meaning (this is the gun I got so it must be better and this round has been around for years, and its all hype, etc, etc), no belt so significant less problems with headspace, less bulging in front of the belt for reloading, more case capacity, no or little freebore, flatter shooting, more energy, you do the math. Figure out which is for you. Both will do basically the same thing and get you the desired result. I don't believe that moose, or brownbear will know the difference. I love that accumark, and it ain't chambered in a 300RUM, but that pricetag is too much for me. When picking the RUM, I wanted a good gun, under 800 dollars, with effective range of 350 yards with my gun zeroed at 200.
Like on poster said, the 30-378 has superior performance. If you want the ultimate speed, and flattness think about that if you have the money. Time marches on. The fins were cool on the 55 chevy's, but there time was then. Edited by - bigcountry on 02/06/2002 14:28:10 |
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
I have owned both and much prefer the ultramag. It delivers more velocity at similar pressures.I find a difference of 100 to 150 fps in the ultramags favor.I am also getting much better accuracy from the ultramag.
|
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
Weatherby460..."The Weatherby outperforms the Ultra Mag". Are you making this statement from experience shooting both guns? The Weatherby ballistics are actually a tad off from the RUM. With the same 200 grain bullet from Remington, the Weatherby shoots 2900fps w/ 3800 ft/lbs energy. The RUM shoots 3025fps with 4063 ft/lbs energy.
I realize they're close, but at 500 yards the RUM is 9" closer to zero than the Weatherby. |
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
According to the 5th Edition Hornady Reloading Handbook one can push a 190 gr. BTSP @ 3200 f/s in a 300 RUM. According to Norma Loading Data one can push a 200 gr. Vulcan 3150 f/s in a 300 Wby. Mag. If all things being equal, including bullet weight the 300 RUM and the 300 Wby. Mag are very simular according to these two load books. It's all a mattter of personal preference. Good Luck.
|
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
Not really Handloader, it a matter of taking both guns to a range with the Chrono and same data. As a handloader, you know that different bullets build different pressures. With my Scirroco's, I start showing major pressure signs with 180g bullets at 95.5g of H1000, but don't show any with Nosler until 97g of H1000. You got to compare apples to apples. Also with the major freebore in weatherby's, pressures at different COL's are hard to compare. Also, with different barrels and throat lengths, this has an effect on velocity.

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
This is from Remington's website, and talks about the compared energy levels between the .300 RUM and the 300 Wby & Win Mags:
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
The cartridge that launched the Ultra Mag line. And the new standard for big game from deer to elk to caribou. Our field tests back that up. The .300 Remington Ultra Mag delivers a muzzle velocity of 3300 feet-per-second and 2145 foot-pounds of retained energy at 500 yards (while certainly not a typical shot, that’s still more than enough energy for effective performance on elk at that range). Even more impressive is how it fares against the competition: At 200 yards, it delivers up to 18% greater retained energy than the 300 Wby. Mag and up to 27% greater retained energy than the 300 Win. Mag.

IMHO significant performance increases. Comparing a .300 Win Mag to a .300 RUM is like comparing a .30-06 to a .300 Win Mag. Yes one can do most of what the other can do, but with big differences in trajectory and retained energy levels. |
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
I don't think anyone was comparing the 300 Win Mag to the RUM or Weatherby. I simply atated I would stick with mine. I don't have big gun envy and don't need anything more than my 300 Win Mag.
|
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
frizz - Big gun envy? There are alot of folks on this site that would contend that owning any magnum qualifies as "big gun envy".
|
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
The 300 RUM, cheaper brass cost & no belt to deal with.

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
RuRu12, nope, just means I already have a big gun and know how to use it so no need to worry about anything bigger.

Bigcountry:
I have two friends, one has a 300 RUM, and the other has a 300 Wby. Mag. They are always having shooting contests at the range to see who can out do the other. It has become an on going battle with them. They both shoot under .75", and their velocities do not deviate more than 70 f/s. They have used the same bullets, powder, primers, etc. I have told them give it up it's like beating a dead horse, but they don't listen. I guess that's the fun of handloading. Good Luck. RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
I WOULD TAKE EITHER GUN BOTH ARE EXCELT BUT THE UM PROBALY WON'T COST AS MUCH AND THE WEATHERBY.

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
Thanks for all the replies, Sorry it caused some controversy between members, I think the caliber advantages lean towards the RUM.
Now here is a new question? Of the three guns what would you choose in 300 Ultra Mag: 1)Remington 700 BDL SS 2)Remington Sendero SF 3)Browning A-Bolt Stainless |

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
Mark in NE,
All the rifles I listed are available in 300 Ultra Mag, the price is almost the same with the Sendero being about $200 more. Just wondering what other members think. The stores here say to go with the Sendero because of the heavier barrel, I wonder if they really just want the extra $200. |
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
OK I redid my homework! I can not find anything conclusive that tells me which one is faster or not. If you look at the weatherby ammo using 200 grain bullets, its faster then the 200 grain bullets by remington. But if you just look at remingtons ammo, they make the ulta mag faster then the wby. If you reload, It looks like you can do darn near the same with either caliber. The weatherby is more expensive. I still love my weatherbys, they are the king when i reload um!

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
340WBYMAG - My .300 RUM is a 700 BDLSS. I prefer the Remington over the Browning, although the Browning is an excellent rifle. The Sendero SF is an excellent rifle. All of the samples I have experience with have shot superbly. The only problem with the Sendero is that it is so darn heavy. The weight would reduce the felt recoil, but if you cover alot of ground it could prove unbearable to carry. I would only hunt with one if I were hunting from a stand, and only then if it didn't require too long of a walk to get there.

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
I stand corrected, after a quick review of Browning's latest 2002 website.
|
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
I have a two BDL's. One in 270 and the other in 300RUM. From now on, I only buy bull barrel in rifles, or sendero fluted or accumark fluted. The 300RUM was accurate but you had to let it cool down between shots to get the accuracy I was looking for. I have since then got another 300RUM in PSS with the heavier barrel. I dont' see the heat effects I do on the BDL's. If I had my choice my barrels would be bigger than the #5 contour currently on the sendero's. I know they are a pain to pack all day in the woods, but I feel more confident and steady with a heavier gun
|
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
Bigcountry-My own 300 ultra mag barrel is only .640" at the muzzle but it is fluted. It will shoot 1/2" 3 shot groups with no cool down between shots. The barrel(pac-nor) is free floated and pillar bedded into a mcmillan stock.

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
I'd choose the 300 Wby. since ballistics are very close to equal between the two and the 300 Wby. has stood the test of time. There have been so many new cartridges developed and released in the last half dozen years that they can't all make it and I believe that some of these new cartridges won't be around in a few years. The 300 Wby. is a time tested proven winner.

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
DID I REALY HEAR YOU GUYS SAY BIG GUN ENVY. MAKE MINE A RUM. SENDERO SF ALL THE WAY. THIS IS MY FAVORITE GUN IN THE ARSENAL.

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
Stubblejumper, uh, mine didn't. I don't really know what you want me to say. I was just giving my advise?? I have had good BDL's and bad. Not all of them will shoot 1/2" or even 1.5MOA accuracy. Just look at American Rifleman on their tests they do. Its a rarity that they get average subMOA accuracy out of any of their test guns. Or any of the hunting mags. They all either have bad shooters, paid off by compitition, or their are alot of people that are real lucky on this page. I have a BDL in 270 that will and always have shot subMOA groups with little or no cool down. Its a kick ass BDL with no or little work. Does that mean all BDL's will? No, its a matter of factory tolerance. Just hope when they hammer forged a barrel, you get one with the least amounts of inpurities. Hope when they hammer forged the barrel, they heated it up to the proper temp so the micro stress cracks wasn't so bad. People are extremely emotional over car brands and guns, I see. I don't have any weatherby's, but I believe they are one well built gun. Maybe one of the best. Just hate the dad gone freebore and belt. And even with a bull barrel, that don't guarantee you much. I talked a freind into getting a Sendero since my PSS shot so well. He is disappointed with the 1.5" groups. So he is sending back to remington. All I knew to tell him, is mine shot well. And if I had plenty of cash, I would only buy the best. You wouldn't see me with any factory BDL, my friend. Only thing factory might be the action. Krieger, lilja, or hart would be the only barrel that I would shoot. Until then, I have to wish for a little luck in my truck and gun purchases and shoot sub $1000 rifles.

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
Bigcountry-I was just pointing out that even thinner barrels can be very accurate in the 300 ultra. They do build heat but a quality barrel in a well built gun can still give great three shot groups with no cool down between shots.I personally do not own any factory rifles as I prefer the quality that only custom rifles offer.

RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
I would seriously concider the Sendaro. I have a .300 ultra mag in a stainless BDL, and after 20 rounds my shoulder is tender shooting from a bench. The added weight will lessen the recoil. With the BDL your looking at 45ft.lbs. of recoil energy, comparable to a .460 Weatherby with a muzzle brake. I shot mine using one hand to grip the rifle on a bench rest, the recoil was enough that the knurled bolt handle removed some skin off the side of my trigger finger. I've seen another post on a different board where someone claims a friend knocked ten teeth out shooting an ultra mag, where the *&#$ did he have his head! I installed a Vais muzzle brake on the BDL, muzzle blast isn't any worse, and it tamed it down to where I can shoot it without holding the front of the stock down while shooting off a rest.
Good Luck with your new rifle :) |
RE: 300 Weatherby or 300 Rem Ultra Mag?
Guys, I forgot about this. But on Saeed's accurate loading page, he has a few apple to apples comparisons on speed and group size. Pretty interesting stuff. They do alot of cool tests with pretty conclution results.
