RE: Want A Muzzle Loader.....Want Kind Should I Get?
I' m also looking to buy a new muzzle loader. I currently shoot a traditions in-line but want something with a closed breech. T/C omega or maybe a nef huntsman. I wonder if anyone has experience with the huntsman?

RE: Want A Muzzle Loader.....Want Kind Should I Get?
I have had a bunch of them. The only ones that really stick with me is my knights and T/C' s. I am not much on the Black Diamond however. I have had a Knight stainless Wolverine since 1996 and its a great accurate gun. I say stay away from Traditions and CVA. I have had one rifle and now got a inline pistol that I have had trouble with, and the customer service is horrible. Look into the Wolverine 209..

I picked up an el cheapo a couple of months back, it' s a Rossi, made in brazil. it breaks open like the NEF' s paid 150.00 for it. put a good scope on it. can' t believe how good it shoots. I' ve got lots left for supplies.

Go to H&R TALK. There is a whole forum on the Huntsman. You can' t beat the Black Diamond from TC Mine groups 2 inches at 100 yards all day everyday.

I would stick with Thompson Center or Knight. I used to own a CVA that served me well for three years. I sold that and got a T/C Encore 209 Magnum and love it! I will keep this gun as long as I hunt. It fits me well and shoot like a dream.

CVA has been great for me,I own the firebolt in nickle plate and mossyoak .It shoot so straight that I hold a 1 inch 5 shot group at 100 yards. And they are cheap enough that it won' t hurt the pocketbook.

I' m with you bayonets. The wife bought me a CVA Hunter Mag Bolt for X-mas last year. Shoots great, makes a nice tight clover leaf pattern at 100 yds. Took a doe at 150 yds. dropped on the spot. I shot my buddies T/C Omega and it wasn' t anymore accurate than my CVA. He paid three times more.

I' ve got a Knight American in .50 caliber that cost around $150. It' s their bottom of the line, but it' s been an outstanding gun for me. In the three years I' ve owned it, I' ve killed more deer with it than my other rifles. You can upgrade to a Wolverine for not much more than that. My dad has one of those, and they' re great guns. Some of the Thompson Center rifles look sweet, but they' re a bit more than the Knight (at least the ones I like are).
If you do get a Knight, make sure you get the 209 primer. I can' t recommend that enough. I hunted for two years with the No. 11 percussion cap, and it cost me a nice buck on a misfire. Since I converted to the 209, I' ve never had a misfire, and I get a much more satisfying response when I squeeze the trigger. I don' t know why they even make a rifle with a No. 11 anymore. |
RE: Want A Muzzle Loader.....Want Kind Should I Get?
without a dought you should get the thompson center encore |
RE: Want A Muzzle Loader.....Want Kind Should I Get?
Obviously I'm a little partial, but the Encore is an awesome rifle. I'm not saying that it'll outshoot everything on the market, but its the "versatility" that makes it stand out. Once you buy the frame, you can buy other barrels that will take any game in the world. And with you being a turkey hunter, they also offer a 12ga barrel and a 12ga muzzleloading shotgun barrel designed especially for turkey. Good luck on your search.

I am a T/C Fan also. The cost is a little higher, but you get grest customer service, and it is American Made. I do not have anything negative to say about foreign guns like CVA and Traditions, but I would rather have my dollars support the good ol' USA.:)
