LouisianaHunter,

Sounds like a pretty good plan to me! Any of the calibers, (or rifles), you named should do a very good job for you! Mounted with a decent scope and properly sighted they' d make great " stand" guns. (You might have made a pretty good case for picking the .270 WSM. It would certainly be able to reach out with its flat trajectory!) And it would do it probably with reasonable recoil!

Good luck with your decision!

Louisiana Hunter,

If you are looking to essentially " duplicate" (for all practical deer hunting purposes) the 308 you already have, then the 270/3006/7mm-08 stuff ought to due you fine. I believe in cartridge/caliber spacing instead of collecting a bunch of rifle that are roughly equivalent.

In your case, I' d recommend you drop " down" from the .308 to 6mm/25-06/260 territory. Doesn' t sound like you' ll be leaving Louisiana so no need to mention the possiblities in the other direction (larger rifles and larger game).

I have an A-Bolt in 270 and love it. I also have a 30-30 and 308. I think the 270 is a nice addition. It dropped a deer in its tracks for me last year at 70 yards.

i have a 270 savage model 110 with a 4-12x40 bushnell scope on it, i hunt in long fields were distance is key to killing a deer, my 270 with 150 win. balistics in it, drops all day long you wont be disapointed by going with the standard 270, but my dad hunts with a 30' 06 sprgfld standard and its about the same, all year round, so witchever way you go you will be gettin a good gun,

I bought a .270 BAR five years ago. I put a Pentax lightseeker scope (2.5x) on it and it has been the sweetest shooting rifle I every own.

I recently purchased a 300 WSM in a Browning BAR. Most of my hunting falls into the under 200 yards for a 200 pound whitetail. With that said, I also occasionally hunt Antelope on the Western plains out to 400, and once in a while my Elk tag gets drawn. My buddy lives in the Wyoming area that borders Utah and Colorado and we sometimes have to shoot 300 yards to tag our Elk. The 300 WSM does it all. Now, if I didn' t hunt Elk, I' d still find a reason to purchase the 300, even though I' ve got a handy little .270.:D

But Honey, I need that big ole bad rifle for when I' m out elk hunting. After all, haven' t you heard the woods are just full of lions and tigers and bears....oh my! Really!!!

I am leaning to the 270 wsm just because. I now have to wait until next year since I just purchased an Omega.

Thats the spirit. Everybody on this page should have at least 3 deer rifles, each that will easily do the job. Just because were americans, and we like alot of guns. Besides its good for the economy:D

Either the 30-06 or 270 would be my choice. The 06 is available in several different bullet weights making it very versatile. The 270 is a great deer cartridge.I' ve shot several deer at 200 yards with my 270 using 150 grain bullets. They dropped in their tracks. If you' re going for just a deer rifle these will fill your needs.Ammunition is available almost everywhere for these two cartridges.
