RE: Advice about a rifle and pistol

Hartr66 If you are looking at a savage striker, they do come in 308 and several other cals. They also have a mag that holds 2 rounds and counting the one in the barrel makes 3. I've got one in 7mm-08 and is one hell of a pistol, recoil not bad either. They are dam accurate just out of the box, price not bad either. Zeak

I own a Winchester .357mag lever action carbine. Here's the score with that gun:

2 mule deer shot under 100 yards with 180gr SP bullets

dozen or so coyotes

2 Javelina

couple of foxes

1 Arizona Mt. Lion

3 CA bobcats.

Works for me.

if you can shoot a revolver well, out to 100 its a sufficient deer gun ( itll do it if you can shoot it) yards a 7.5" ruger blackhawk would be a good choice. if you reload you can push a 180 hollowpoint or softpoint at around 1500fps (only in ruger or contender frames)

While there is no doubt one can bag deer with a .357 mag carbine, it is far from ideal for the job. If you insist on a pistol-caliber for rifle work, the .44 mag would be a better choice, and you can use it in your revolver as well.

RE: Advice about a rifle and pistol

well the revolver out to 100 yards might be a little long (keep it to 75). with a carbine and handloads (15 or 16 grains of 2400) (thats a over max load and should be worked up too). the funny thing about that load is that the original load for the .357 was 14 or 15grains of 2400 but now they made a pansy round out of it to make it safe in weak guns. Out of a carbine it will yield 2000-2100 fps with a 180 bullet. whick is almost as good as a 30-30 but it has an advantage with a larger frontal area.

ELDEGUELLO........I agree with you. That's why i also own a Winchester .44mag lever action carbine rifle. I got a nice 2x3 mule deer with that rifle this past season. Shot him at about 40 yards in some woods just north of Los Angeles...
