Fair trades--Ruger sp101 for lever guns
Here's a description of the Ruger Sp101: .357, 3" barrel, at most two boxes of shells fired through it, original box and paperwork. and looks 99% in terms of condition.
Would these trades be reasonable:
(My hunch is that this puts the Ruger's trade-in value at 400, but an FFL dealer would want more meat on the bone reselling the revolver, or the rifle would not include a scope/sling). Other trades you could think of, Ruger sp101 for a lever action? |
Are you holding the SP101, or holding the leverguns?

you didn't say what finish is on your pistol, is it blued or stainless??
and I think you will need to maybe anti up some cash to get either of them rifles in GOOD condition , have a look on places like armslist and guns america for used one's of both and see the averages on prices!, to get a better idea on values and things not saying a deal cannot happen, just being honest, you might need to put in some cash to get a nice clean rifle that your looking for! |
I'll be the one holding the Ruger.

I personally think you’d be coming out ahead to make the trade for the Savage. The value of SP101’s is recently and considerably inflated, so I think folks are pretty reticent to buy or trade a used SP at $500 value, whereas it’s much more simple in the nationwide online market to sell a good condition 99 for more than $500. If the guy takes the deal, you win big by my standards - but I wouldn’t take the trade in his shoes. Maybe the SP + $100 or more.
At my shop, operating for profit, I wouldn’t take an SP101 even trade for a Marlin 1894 or Win 94 unless I was simply in a market where leverguns didn’t sell well - which ain’t here! The SP would likely move well when listed for $550, cash price $500, over a $350-400 trade value. But I’m not sure I think many shops are getting Marlin 1894’s or Win 94’s for $350-400, and I don’t see any locally listing them used for $400 - most are $500+. The SP101 should move faster than the levergun, but you’re really trading nickels on their profit potential. Same deal here - I think you come out considerably ahead if a shop takes the SP for a Marlin or Win in good condition. |
Thanks, Nomercy.
That's very helpful. My numbers might be a little too optimistic. |
well I also agree you'd be way better off selling the SP 101, they have gone up a bunch in pricing last few yrs
and right now with gun sales being high your maybe way better off selling and this way having the option of a cash buy from someone else selling what you want, as not all folks selling guns want trades and also listing where your at might help you here too |
