Finally got one at a decent price
Not my first choice of chamberings but I can't beat the price. I was finally able to get my hands on a gorgeous left hand version of the Winchester Model 70. A really pretty walnut stock with just a couple minor handling marks in 270WSM. I tried to do a search for the serial number but could not find it from Winchester. (GWSM008). Such a low serial number may mean its a custom rifle and if so is worth much more than I put out for it. If anyone can shed some light on the SN let me know.

yeah they can be very hard to find at a good price. one of the guys I hunt deer with around here in FLA , had to search for almost 15 years to find a pristine 270 win he lusted after at a decent price |
I wish it was a .270 Win. I hunted for 30 years and numerous states with one and it did everything I wanted. But this is a 270WSM. I guess its just a 270 Win on steroids! I doubt if I'll be handloading for this but you never know. I don't think I'll be shooting it much. I'll stick with my .45-70s. I just wanted a left hand model 70.

Well well well I sent an email off to Winchester and got a reply today. The rifle was manf in 2002 and was definitely a short action left hand 270wsm made by the custom shop. All the prices I've seen on gunsamerica for custom wins were over $4500. I basically stole this rifle.

Got the dies, brass and bullets (140 gr Barnes TSX) and loaded up 10 rounds each of 60, 61, and 62 gr of IMR7828 to see how it shoots. In the near future I plan on getting some MagPro powder to try. Apparently all the resources I've looked at say that it is the most accurate followed by IMR7828. My one concern with the MagPro is that I've read that it is really temperature sensitive. Not sure how true that is. I also plan on trying some Nosler Accubond LR 140 gr bullets. Its going to be a busy summer.
All I need now is waiting for my Leupold 4-16X scope to arrive. |
The 270 WSM is in my opinion the best of the WSM Family, it made the most sense. I have owned 2 of them over the Years, Tikka T3s, The very first WSM i owned was the 7MM and it was a Winchester Model 70, It was an Ok Gun, But Nothing spectacular Ballistic wise. I handloaded for all of them, Hodgdon 4350 would have been the powder i used, I remember Loading the 140 Grain Nosler Accubond bullets in the .270s, Accuracy was always my goal, The Slower Burning powders such as Hodgdon’s Retumbo, and H-1000 Gave slightly better Velocities But were also Compressed Loads which I’ve Never liked. I always looked for a Powder that gave a Load Density in the mid/upper 90s, Close to 100% |
OK bullets loaded, scope installed and now all I have to do is find some time to shoot. Will post a range report hopefully in the near future.
