Which Caliber for new Army Machine Gun??
Will the army select for their new machine gun? From the article, it looks like it's likely somewhere between .22 and 30 caliber. Maybe 6 or 7 mm?

Seems like most signs are pointing to 6.5 Creed. For the application, I’m on board with it. |

the current loads for the 6.5mm creed are loaded too no where close to the pressure levels listed in that linked article

It almost makes you think they're looking for a brand new caliber that can safely be loaded to such extreme levels so they eliminate the possibility of the new ammo being loaded into an existing rifle and avoid any accidents.

Which are...? Lighter, smaller rifles, with lighter bullet weight. I’m ignoring all of these idiotic claims of telescoping case cartridges. I’ve seen rumor the 6.8spc would be a contender in the squad rifle to replace 5.56 based mg’s, but it falls so far short on 7.62 based, I imagine it’s all speculation and desire, not tangible. |
What about .243 and say, 75-80gr bullets loaded to about 3,200-3,400fps???

The article listed some intriguing requirements. The new gun would have to:
1. Blast through enhanced armor at 2,000 feet away. 2. Have the new weapon will weigh less than 12 pounds and the new ammo to be 20 percent less than an equal brass case weight. 3. With the buttstock down, it would be 35 inches long or less. 4. The rate of fire will be 60 rounds per minute with 3-round burst for 15 minutes without a barrel change or cook-off. There were more requirements listed but just these are pretty ambitious. |
