Default cartridge choice

out of the .270, 30-06, and the 7mm which would all of you guys prefer for hunting whitetails in fairly open areas (mainly misquite trees in west texas)?

I will put my personal prejudices aside and say this: All are fine cartridges, use the one you shoot the best and are the most comfortable with.

I agree with Friz...even though I am not a big fan of the 7mm mag. Just had some bad experiences with them.

BRANDON, I TOO AM BUST'N THAT WEST TEXAS BRUSH, HAVE BEEN FOR ABOUT THE LAST TEN YEARS, WITH THE SAME SIX GUYS. THE 7MAG IS GUN OF CHOICE AT OUR CAMP EXCEPT FOR ONE KNUCKLE HEAD THAT TOATES A 300 WIN.

SOME WILL SAY A 7MM IS OVERKILL FOR WHITETAIL. I SAY BLAH! IF YOU WOULD SHOOT A DEER WITH A P.O.S. 30-06 HOW IS A 7MAG OVERKILL.

300 YDS IS MY PERSONAL LIMMIT AT ANY ANIMAL. MY PERSONAL BEST IS MORE LIKE 225YDS. BUT A 7MAG MAKES A 300YD SHOT POSSIBLE WITH CONFIDENCE.

.270 IS A FINE DEER CARTRIGE, AND HAS KILLED PLENTY O DEER BUT IT JUST LEAVES ME FLAT. NOT ENOUGH UMPH FOR MY TASTE. HELL I EVEN OWN A .270. AS FAR AS 30-06 WELL THAT JACK OF ALL TRADES MASTER OF NONE....I'M SO SICK OF THAT, SOMEBODY PLEASE SHOT ME. UNDER POWERED OVER RATED P.O.S.

If you handload, get whichever you seem to like the most.....If you DON'T handload...go for the 30/06 ....you won't be sorry.

I own 2 of the 3 you mentioned and for whitetails I would choose the 270.

All three calibers you mentioned are great deer cartridges.I've been using a 270 for sometime and have had good luck with it. Last year I got a new Ruger 77 in 7mm .I haven't shot any deer with it yet but I'm sure it will lay them low.The 30-06 has taken it's share of venison. It's easy to find surplus ammo to shoot in that 06.Any you choose will be a good choice. Ruger Redhawk
